Staff Reporter :Unidentified assailants stabbed Ilias Hossain-Bin-Helali, President of a faction of Bangladesh Awami Ulama League (BAUL), when he was going to attend a rally organized in the Bangabandhu Avenue in memory of the 11th anniversary of the deadly grenade attack into a rally in the city on August 21 in 2004.The 50-year old man was attacked near the South Gate of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after offering Jumma prayers on Friday, said Saifur Rahman, Assistant Police Commissioner of Motijheel Zone.Helali received severe injuries in his neck as well and was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, the police official said, but reasons behind the attack are not yet clear.”Police have arrested a suspect in connection the incident from the spot. He has been identified as Mujahidul Islam, 21, and handed over to Detective Branch of Police,” said Golam Morshed, Officer-in Charge (OC) of Paltan Police Station.Mujahid is being interrogated by DB in this connection, the OC said. Ulama League Joint-General Secretary Aktar Hossain said that a youth aged about 17 years, attacked Helali after Jumma prayers.Two factions of the Ulama League use the same address but observe programmes separately, sources said.
