The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday commuted the death sentence of Oishee Rahman to life term imprisonment in the case filed for killing her parents in 2013.
The HC bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain Selim and M Jahangir Hossain passed the order on Monday morning after conclusion of hearing on the death reference and appeals. The court also fined Oishee Tk 5,000 and in default she will have to suffer six months more in the prison. The court said, it commuted the sentence of Oishee as she was addicted at the time of the murder and she had no previous criminal record.
On Sunday, the court fixed Monday to deliver its verdict on the death reference, and appeal of Oishee against the death penalty. Earlier, on May 7, the Bench kept the death reference and appeal in the case waiting for verdict after conclusion of the hearing that begun on March 12.
On November 12, 2015, Judge Syed Ahmed of the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka sentenced Oishee Rahman to death for killing her father the river, he said.
“A boat carrying seven passengers capsized in the area around 10:00pm while it was returning from Mirpur. Several passengers managed to swimming to the shore, but the, three children went missing. On information, Mirpur fire service rushed to the spot and after hours of searching they recovered bodies of two children early Monday” he added.
