Administrative officials have complained to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina against Deputy Minister for
Youth and Sports Arif Khan Joy for ‘vandalising’ a joint secretary’s chamber.
In a parallel move, the joint secretaries to ministry met the Secretary and demanded a proper working atmosphere.
The deputy minister lost his temper on Sunday because his name did not appear in a banner put up at the National Youth Day programme and went to ransack joint secretary Md Mashuk Mia’s chamber.
The footballer-turned-politician, who was made a deputy minister after the last national election, denied the allegation of vandalism. Instead, he claimed he had summoned the official to his chamber and rebuked him.
The former captain of the national football team had earlier faced flak in 2012 for having entered a field with a weapon in his pocket when a match was on.
Theere was palpabale tension in the ministry on Monday but no official or employee was willing to speak to journalists about the previous day’s incident.
The deputy minister did not attend office on Monday. The joint secretary’s room, too, was locked. Minister of State Biren Shikdar rushed off to attend to another engagement after completing the ministerial meetings.
“Officials of the administrative cadre have complained to the prime minister against the deputy minister’s act of vandalism through senior secretaries,” said a senior sport ministry official on condition of anonymity.
