Abdul Muqit Chowdhury :
Allah is with the believers, who seek with patient perseverance and prayer : “Nay, seek (God’s) help/ With patient perseverance/ And prayer : /It is indeed hard, except/To those who bring a lowly spirit,” – “Who bear in mind the certainty/ That they are to meet their Lord,/And that they are to return to Him.”
(Sura Baqara 2:45, 46. The Holy Quran : Translation and Commentary by Allama Yusuf Ali).
“And no one will be/Granted such goodness/Except those who exercise/Patience and self-restraint, –/ None but persons of/The greatest good fortune.” (Sura Ha-Mim Sajda/Fussilat 41:35. Do )
There are many Ayats on Sabr –patience in the Holy Quran. ‘Sabr’ is patience and self-restraint. Holy Ramzan has been recognised in the Hadith as ‘Shahrus Sabr’- ‘the month of patience.’ While a rozadar abstains from having food, drink and some of the enjoyments inspite of the availability of everything he/she desires, it is his/her patience-Sabr. The test of Iman and Sabr goes on whole through the month. The continuous process of patience makes his/her character crowned with tolerance. Such a person can face all odds in the name of Allah, achieve success in this world and will be rewarded in the next world.
The Holy Quran urges to have patience, and assures success of such pious people who practice patience. Patience (Sabr) is half of Iman (Faith) according to Holy Hadith.
In the light of the Ayat and Hadith our fasting may be viewed and patience be evaluated. There is everything within the reach. But the rozadar abstains from these till sunset. A chain of activities with patience follows. This process becomes possible because the rozadar accepts patience and tolerance as life-style.
The Holy Quran says : “Be sure We shall test you / With something of fear/ And hunger, some loss/ In goods or lives or the fruits/ (Of your toil), but give/ Glad tidings to those/ Who patiently persevere,” (Sura Baqara 2:155) Do.
Patience is very important during the month of Ramzan. It is the manifestation of self-restraint earned through fasting.
Hazrat Salman Farsi (Ra) narrated from Hazrat Muhammad (Sm) : “It is the month of patience and tolerance. The return for patience is Zannat.”
Ramzan is the best time to attain this virtue through physical and mental training.
Anger should be controlled in spite of provocations. Rasulullah (Sm) said, “If someone misbehaves with you on ignorance to quarrel, tell him, I am fasting. I am not ready to quarrel by mouth or with hands.”
So, we should observe patience and be above anger, which is detrimental to peace and tranquility in the society. The Quran and Sunnah ordain this responsibility and we should stick to this principle.
