A close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also the then Member of National Assembly (MNA) of Pakistan during the liberation war Adv Afsar Ali Ahmed breathed his last at prime medical college hospital in Rangpur at 9.40 am on Monday.
He was 98 years of age and was suffering from various complicated elderly diseases for last few years. Before his death, he was kept in the hospital with life support for 13 days till his death.
A founding member of Bangladesh Awami League, Afsar Ali Ahmed served as president of Nilphamari Unit of the party till 1990 and played a vital role in organising people for independence of the country.
In movements of realising 6-point charter of demands, mass movement of 1969, election of 1970, the deceased worked day and night.
He was elected as MNA for Pakistan national assembly in 1970 general election from Nilphamari-Jaldhaka and Saidpur constituency.
He was again elected as member of parliament (MP) for Bangladesh Jatiyo Sangsad in 1973, getting ticket from the party.
After assassination of Bangabandhu in 1975, Afsar Ali fell victim of the then military regime and ‘hulia’issued against him by the regime and he went into hiding for a long time and organized the party from the hiding place when his family faced continuous oppression in his absence.
He was a life member of Nilphamari Lawyers’ Association.
He left behind his wife, five sons, three daughters to mourn his death.
His first namaj-e janaja was held at Nilphamari Eidgah Maidan at 2.00p.m yesterday and was buried at circuit house graveyard in Nilphamari municipality.
