The Police Bureau of Investigation, or PBI, has been given five days to grill Kamrun Nahar Moni in the case filed over the killing of Sonagazi madrasa student Nusrat Jahan Rafi.
Feni’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Sharafuddin Ahmed passed the order on Wednesday after the PBI had sought a 10-day remand to question Moni, a classmate of Nusrat’s.
Like Nusrat, Moni was also sitting the Alim exams, an equivalent of the HSC, at Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa this year. According to the PBI, she was among the five people who set Nusrat on fire at the madrasa’s rooftop on Apr 6.
Nusrat had pressed charges of sexual abuse against the madrasa’s principal Siraj-ud-Daula. Police subsequently arrested Siraj in connection with the case initiated by Nusrat’s mother Shirina Akhtar on Mar 26.
After refusing to withdraw the case, a few (5) burqa-clad assailants tricked Nusrat on to the madrasa’s roof and allegedly set her on fire. She died with nearly 85 percent burns to her body on Apr 10.
On Monday, PBI chief DIG Banaj Kumar Mazumder told bdnews24.com, “Although we initially found four names present at the time of the attack, the investigation confirmed that there were actually five people on the rooftop. Two of the five were women.”
Of the two women, one was madrasa principal SM Siraj-ud-Daula’s neice Umme Sultana Popi, who was arrested on suspicion by police despite not being named in the case.
Meanwhile, the PBI has arrested another suspect named Jubair based on the confessional statements of the accused Nur Uddin and Shahadat Hossain Shamim.
Despite confirming the arrest, DIG Banaj was unwilling to disclose further details on the matter before producing the suspect in court.
