Nursery business now gainful in Narsingdi

The number of nurseries in private sector including sunflower cultivation has increased in six upazilas of the district. The nurseries have also become popular in rural and urban areas.
The upazilas are Ripura, Belabo, Palash, Shibpur, Monohardi and Narsingdi sadar. A good number of owners have been maintaining their family expenses through this business.
About 580 small and big nurseries have been set up in different areas of the district where at least 2500 workers are working to earn their livelihood.
The government has also taken up a massive programme for plantation through setting up nurseries in six upazilas including district headquarter located at Gaboli in order to preserve the ecological balance.
The plantation programme is also being implemented by the initiative of No-government organisations while the side of roads; highways and premises of office and educational institutions are planting various kinds of saplings.
Out of different nurseries some nurseries like Arshinagar, Saudia, Narsingdi Khadiza Rabia, Uddagan, Fulkuri, Rail station Narsingdi under Narsingdi Municipal area, Shibpur upazila, the biggest and rich with plants of different varieties.
While contacted the owner of Narsingdi Khadiza Rabia Nursery Mokter Hossain told The New Nation correspondent that he set up a nursery on 1 hectares of land in 1990. He served in a nursery abrodd and gathered a vast knowledge in this profession. His initial capital was Tk 10, lakhs now it was raise to Tk 15 lakhs. He planted different kinds of saplings including flower, fruity, woody and medicinal. The daily sale proceed of his nursery is tk 5,000 to 10,000 and monthly income excluding all expenditure is about Tk 50,000.
Many people are now willing to come to this profession due to good profit, be added. On the other hand, sunflower cultivation has gained popularity in Narsingdi. People are now showing interest in consuming the edible oil, which are extracted from sunflower seeds.
Besides, many farmers are cultivating the crop at their own initiatives, sunflower can be cultivated in all the seasons, AED sources said.
