Nurse-staff clash at DMCH: 20 hurt

At least 20 people were injured in Clashes between nurses and staff at the Pathology Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday for delay in delivering pathology reports.
The Sunday noon incident took place in the new building of the DMCH at the Pathology Department on the first floor about 12:30pm. More clashes took place in front of the Director’s Office. Tension still remains between the two sides regarding the incident.
The injured men are undergoing treatment at the Emergency Unit, said a hospital sources.
Md Russel, a brother who was on duty at the Emergency Unit, said that an employee of the Pathology Department misbehaved with him when he wanted to know the reason of delay in delivering test reports.
“At one stage, the staff clubbed Russel. Three more persons came under attack when they protested the incident,” alleged Russel.
Pathology Department Staff Foyez said, “Some nurses came to collect pathological reports around 1pm without disclosing their identities. They attacked me when there was a little delay in providing the report. A clash took place then and there.
“When our departmental Chair, Dr Abul Aziz, came forward, they even attacked him. They then went away, later coming back in more number, and attacked us again.”
However, President of Nurses Association, Kamal Patwary, had a different version of what happened.
“They held and attacked some of our nurses over a frivolous matter. Later, the staff attacked us repeatedly. We demand that the attackers be prosecuted,” he said.
Confirming the matter to DMCH police outpost Inspector Md Bachchu Mia said, “The clash was an internal matter of the Pathology Department. The hospital Director is looking into the matter.”
Being informed, DMCH Director Brigadier General KM Nasir Uddin rushed to the spot and called upon all for showing restraint.
Meanwhile, the nurses brought out a protest procession and tried to move towards the department hearing that three nurses were beaten up there.
Fourth class employees and technologists also brought out another procession on the ground floor demanding justice.
Dr Aziz, Head of Pathology Department, said, he tried to tackle the situation, but agitators also attacked him.
