SM Mizanur Rahman :Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the sensational Narayanganj seven-murder case, landed in Dhaka central jail on Friday hours after he was brought back home from India.Amid tight security police produced Nur Hossain before a Narayanganj court around 2:30 pm in connection with 13 criminal cases, including the sensational seven-murder case, filed with Shiddhirganj and Fatullah police stations.After the hearing, Chief Judicial Magistrate Shahidul Islam sent him to the jail. However, police did not seek remand to interrogate Nur Hossain as what the law enforcers said ‘they have already submitted charge-sheet against 35 people, including Nur Hossain, in connection with the sensational seven murders.At first he was sent to Narayanganj district jail from where he was taken to Dhaka central jail at about 4.15 pm on Friday.”We have no scope to seek remand for Nur Hossain or make any confessional statements to this end at this stage of the seven murder case as charge-sheet has already been submitted before the court,” Superintendent of Police of Narayanganj Khandakar Mahid Uddin told The New Nation on Friday. Earlier on Thursday midnight, Bangladesh government brought back Nur Hossain from India through Benapole border from where he was taken to Rapid Action Battalion-1 headquarters at Uttara in the city amid tight security on Friday morning. Later, Nur Hossain was brought to the Narayanganj Police Lines from RAB-1 office at about 8.30 am where he had been kept about six hours. He was then brought to the court from Narayanganj Police Lines.On April 27 in 2014, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in the city. At the same time, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge’s Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.Three days into their abduction, their bodies were recovered from the Shitalakkhya River on April 30 last year.Soon after the killing Nur Hossain fled to India and was caught in Kolkata on June 15 last year on charges of illegal trespass.Later, the two cases were filed in connection with the murders. Nazrul’s wife Selina Islam Beauty filed a case against six people, including NCC Councillor Nur Hossain, while Chandan’s son-in-law Bijoy Kumar Paul filed the other case against some unknown people.Police submitted a charge-sheet accusing 35 persons, including Nur Hossain, before a Narayanganj court on April 8 this year in the seven-murder case.On Friday afternoon, as soon as Nur Hossain reached the court premises, people from all walks of life started chanting slogans demanding capital punishment. Additional members of different law enforcing and intelligence agencies were deployed in and around the court to avert any untoward incidents.Only law enforcers, lawyers, victims’ family members and the court’s staff and officials were allowed to stay inside the court premises.On Thursday night, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) handed over Nur Hossain to Bangladesh at Benapole border of Jessore. He was wearing a bulletproof vest and a helmet at that time.Selina Islam, wife of the slain Nazrul Islam on Friday expressed dissatisfaction, as Nur Hossain has not been placed on remand.Shahidul Islam, Nazrul’s father-in-law, claimed that RAB officials killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk 6 crore from City Councillor Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the murder case, and other accomplices.The three former officials of RAB-11 in Narayanganj – Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Navy’s Lt Commander MM Rana-were sent on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in the incident. They are now in jail.Earlier, police submitted reports on seizing property of eight fugitive accused, including Nur Hossain, in the cases before the court.The other fugitive accused are: sepoy Mahiuddin Munshi, Sergeant Enamul Kabir, constable Habibur Rahman Habib, Sanaullah Sana, Manager Shahjahan, Jamal Uddin and Selim.Besides, police produced 22 charge-sheeted accused before the court amid strong security in the morning.On April 8, detectives submitted charge-sheet against 35 people, including three sacked RAB officials-Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana-and Nur Hossain, in connection with the sensational seven murders.Of them, 22 were arrested while 13, including prime accused Nur Hossain, remained absconding since the murders.”I’m sad as Nur Hossain has not been placed on remand. If he would be placed on remand and interrogated, the mastermind behind the gruesome murder would be unearthed,” she said.Selina Islam said there is no enmity between her husband slain Nazrul Islam and RAB.”I had wanted Nur Hossain to be placed on remand as who was the mastermind behind such heinous murders, has not been mentioned in the charge-sheet,” she said However, on Thursday night, Selina Islam expressed satisfaction over Nur Hossain’ repatriation from India and thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She filed a naraji (no confidence) petition with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate H M Shafikul Islam in Narayanganj against the charge-sheet on May 11, as names of five accused were dropped from the charge-sheet.The court later rejected the petition. Following the rejection, Selina filed revision with Narayanganj district and sessions’ judge court, which was also rejected by the court on November 9.Following order of a West Bengal court on October 16, the government was awaiting formal message from its Indian counterpart to repatriate Nur Hossain. The court order came as the Indian Home Ministry had accepted a request from Bangladesh government to send Nur Hossain back home.The Indian government had decided to withdraw the cases regarding illegal entry against Nur Hossain following the request.Earlier on October 16, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate of North 24 Parganas district Sandipan Chakrabarty ordered repatriation of Nur Hossain.According to the Interpol website, the red warrant was issued against Nur for his alleged involvement with six crimes, including murder, hiding evidence of the crime, kidnapping persons with intent to wrongful confinement, wrongful restraint, impersonating a public servant and group involvement in crime.As the new extradition treaty between Bangladesh and India has been signed Nur Hossain was brought back to Bangladesh.
