Drugs, weapons recovered after raid: Nur Hossain failed to flee

N'ganj SP says we could not trace him yet but some of his close associates nabbed

Our Narayanganj Correspondent :Police in a belated raid on Friday afternoon recovered huge quantity of phensidyl, foreign liquor, beer, yaba tablets and several sharp weapons from five shops of local ruling party leader Nur Hossain, the prime accused of sensational Narayanganj seven-murder, at Shimrail a truck stand in Siddhirganj in the district. Hossain however, so far remains untraced though a case mentioning his name by Selina Islam, wife of Nazrul Islam was filed on April 28. Nur Hossain, who is a Narayanganj City Corporation councilor and also Senior vice president of Siddirganj thana unit of Awami League (AL) used to control the truck stand for running his drug trading in the area, said some local people to The new Nation. He was a very dreaded man as he was also president of thana chapter of inter-district truck drivers union, some people requesting anonymity said. People of the area are still afraid of speaking against Nur Hossain as he used to maintain a big gang of notorious criminals to run his illegal activities including drug and sand business occupying the banks of the river Sitalakhya. In the process Nur Hossain became known as sort of ” god father” of criminals in Narayanganj. Four persons is RAB uniform used to remain on guard at his Shimrail Crossing house at Siddirganj. But on investigation it was revealed that those people had nothing to do with RAB but they used to wear the uniform only to terrorise the people. Though it all happened before the eyes of the administration but no action was taken against him, some eye witnesses said. Nur Hossain used to use the name of Dipu Chowdhury, son of minister for disaster management and relief Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya as one of his business partners. Nur Hossain jointly with Dipu have recently got a tender of a big amount of money of Roads and Highways, some local people said. Land grabbing was another source of making money for Hossain who used to maintain a chain with influential people of the ruling party and also the local administration, they said. Nur Salam, elder brother of Nur Hossain used to look after land grabbing business on his behalf. He also used to run two hotels at Shimrail, where he used to keep women for entertainment of his close associates and members of his gang. Those two hotels, were locally known as dens of criminals. One of the victims of land grabbing of Hossain family talking to this correspondent said that a plot of his seven katha land at Rasulbagh, Siddirganj was occupied by Nur Hossain,s brother popularly known in the area as Boba Dakat. He used to share hius illegally earned money with ruling party bigwigs, members of the local administration and also some local powerful ruling party leaders including local MPs, it is alleged. A team of District Special Branch (DSB) conducted the raid at the truck stand around 4:15pm on Friday. They recovered 3,500 bottles of phensidyl, 37 cans of beer and nine bottles of other foreign liquor and seven sharp weapons from his five shops.”We raided Nur Hossain’s truck stand office in Siddhirganj around 4:45pm and recovered at least 50 local weapons, 19 sacks of phensedyl, huge quantity of yaba tablets, beer and several bottles of foreign liquor,” Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) M. Zakaria told The New Nation on Friday. None was arrested during the drive as all the shops were locked, he said. Earlier, on May 3, police raided Nur Hossain’s house and seized a bloodstained vehicle. Nazrul, a councillor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and panel mayor, senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and his five associates were abducted from the city’s court area on April 27. Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river three days later.Selina Islam filed an abduction case against Nur Hossain, general secretary of Siddirganj thana unit of AL Hazi Yasin Yasin and four others on April 28.”We have made substantial progress in the case. We have already gathered vital information from different agencies but in the interest of investigation we cannot disclose everything now,” Khandaker Mahid Uddin, Narayanganj Superintendent of Police (SP) told The New Nation. He further said, more people will be detained, arrested and interrogated and we will quiz every single suspect for drawing conclusion of the case. Replying to a question, he said, Nur Hossain tried to flee the country but failed to do so.”We do not think that Nur Hossain has managed to flee the country. We have arrested some of his close associates. They are being interrogated. Nur Hossain will be arrested soon,” he said.When he was asked about whereabouts of Nur Hossain, the SP refused to make any comment.
