The number one ranked private university of the country, North South University (NSU) celebrated the International Day of Mathematics 2022 recently. The International Day of Mathematics (IDM) is a worldwide celebration
officially celebrated each year on March 14. The day is also celebrated in many countries as ‘Pi’ day. The first three significant digits of the mathematical constant ‘Pi’ are 3.14, which is also used in many counties to represent the date March 14. The IDM celebration expands Pi Day to include the whole spectrum of mathematics. Due to the restriction of ‘in-person campus activities’ till March 15, the university shifted the celebration
to March 24 with the physically involvement of the students in the programme. The day was celebrated with a daylong activity arranging a rally, mathematical contest, seminar for students and a cultural programme. The celebration started with a colourful rally in the morning. After the rally, a math contest took place where more than 100 students participated from different disciplines. In the seminar held in the afternoon, the Vice-Chancellor of NSU, Professor Atiqul Islam, joined the programme as the chief guest. Prof Dr Laek Sazzad Andallah, Department of Mathematics, Jahangirnagar University, joined the programme as a special guest. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor of NSU Prof Dr M Ismail Hossain, Dean of the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences, Prof Dr Javed Bari, graced the occasion as honorable guests. The program started with the welcome speech by Dr Md Sahadet Hossain, Chairman, Department of Mathematics and Physics, NSU. The three winners of the mathematical contest were awarded in the programme. Prof Dr Md Mamun Molla, Department of Mathematics and Physics, NSU, delivered a vote of thanks to the department for organising the programme. After the seminar, the NSUSS club member presented a cultural event with an outstanding performance.
In the cultural programme, there was a song on mathematics written and composed by a senior faculty Dr Muhammad Asad Uz Zaman. The seminar and the cultural programme were hosted by two faculty members, Dr Preetom Nag and Afroja Parvin from the Department of Mathematics and Physics, NSU.
