Noted Indian actress Shaoli Mitra dies

Noted Indian actress and Padma Shri awardee Shaoli Mitra breathed her last on Sunday afternoon. She was 74 at the time of passing. She was known for portraying Bangabala from Ritwik Ghatak’s Jukti Tokko Aar Goppo. Born in 1948, Shaoli Mitra was the daughter of noted
theatre personalities Sombhu Mitra and Tripti Mitra.
She was away from media attention for a long period of time. Rituals for her funeral were done at the crematory. She was suffering from health related complications.
Shaoli Mitra was honoured with the coveted Padma Shri Award in 2009. Considered as one of the powerful
actresses in the arena of Indian theatre, she had
performed in critically acclaimed plays including the likes of Pagla Ghora, Nothoboti Onathbot, Putul Khela
and Ekti Rajnoitik Hotya, among others.
She was also the former Chairperson of Bangla Academy. The cultural arena is mourning her demise.
