BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s lawyer Zainul Abedin on Thursday said, “Khaleda Zia does not want release on parole with the clemency of the President. She wants release on bail. It is her right and she is legally entitled to get bail in the cases filed against her.”
He said this in a press conference organised by the lawyers of Khaleda Zia on the Supreme Court premises yesterday. The issue of release on bail or parole came to the fore after recent meetings between the seven BNP lawmakers and Khaleda Zia.
Advocate Zainul Abedin said also, “The government’s statement that they do not interfere in the court’s order about her bail is confusing and not trustworthy.”
“But the people do not know how the highest law officer of the country strongly opposed the Khaleda Zia’s bail prayer in the court. The statement made by the government regarding Khaleda Zia’s bail is completely untrue,” he added.
“Very recently, we went to court with a bail petition of Khaleda Zia. But every time the move was strongly opposed from the government side. We will go to court again for her bail. We hope that the government will inform the court through its law officer that they will have no objection if the court grants her bail,” said Advocate Zainul.
“Khaleda’s cases are politically motivated. He is legally entitled to get bail in the cases. Hopefully the government will respect this legal right henceforth and will not create any obstacle. If the government does not intervene, she will get bail from the court,” added the lawyer.
