Not easy to believe

The titled news item, “Only 25 students have passed in English out of more than 21000 admission seekers in Rajshahi University” published in a daily couple of days back has drawn my attention.
The admission test for 1st year (Hons.) of Rajshahi University was held on Thursday. Only 25 students have passed in English from A unit of Arts Faculty for the session of 2013-14 from out of 21168 admission seekers. Whereas many of them achieved A+ mark in English both in SSC and HSC and also achieved GPA 5.
Not very long ago a good number of GPA 5 holders in the admission test of DU have not got the pass mark.
But if we see the last few years’ results of SSC and HSC, both GPA 5 holders and pass rate have increased significantly.
But the government has not done anything to achieving quality education. In the last few years, less qualified teachers were recruited in primary, secondary and tertiary levels bribing huge money to the leaders of the Awami League (AL) as they are the influential members and Chair of the School Management Committee (SMC). If AL wishes to recruit qualified teachers they could establish Public Service Commission (PSC) for teacher recruitment and their promotions. They could work for separate pay scale.
We have observed that there was an endemic proportion of copying in all the public examinations but they did not work whole-heartedly to stop copying in the public and they succeed. Coaching centres and Guidebooks hinder quality education but both of them have been flouring the last few years. But we have not seen any tangible steps to stop these.
The government could save a huge amount of money by not disbursing salary among the teachers of established schools like: Viqaroonnesa Noon Girs High School and College, BAF Shaheen School and College etc. The government could merge some under-performing schools and colleges to adjacent schools and colleges with better records.
Actually the government is not so sincere to develop the education sector rather they are very much interested to collect public favour by distributing free text books among all the students when almost all have no right to have text books freely.
