“It appears that Police, not Awami League, are contesting with me in this election,” said KM Mujibul Haque, BNP candidate for Cumilla-3 constituency to The New Nation during this correspondent’s visit on the seat on Tuesday.
He said, “In Muradnagar and Bangura Upazilas of the constituency, the ruling party men are playing very limited role due to their internal disputes. Rather the police are doing the work of making the ‘Boat’symbol victorious. The Police are continuously arresting BNP leaders, activists, and even supporters so that they do not join any campaign in the area.”
Police are frequently attacking the BNP men, their houses and vandailising doors and fences and misbehaving with women.
He said, voters came from abroad to franchise their voting rights, but they
are threatened to leave the area. Local BNP men said that police attacked and vandalized former Chairman of Zahapur UP of Murad Nagaor Syed Taufique’s home on Tuesday.
The six terms former chairman Taufiq, however, managed to run from home.
Syed Taufique said before the incident that in his chairmanship in last 36 years and his 77 years life there was no case filed against him. But this time two false cases were filed against him due to his support to Sheaf of Paddy symbol.
On the spot visit to different villages and bazaars of Muradnagar and Bangura Upazilas, the supporters of Sheaf of Paddy were found panicked due to recent incidents of arresting drive against supporters of KM Mujibul Haque.
In Bakhrabad Bazar, Dr. Jasim, a village doctor was arrested on Friday without any reason.
His wife said with tear that her husband is a simple person and not involved in any politics, but 10 cases were filed against him after arrest. Similar allegation made by Bithi Begum. She is wife of Babul Mia from Gangatia of Muradnagor.
Bithi said her husband was arrested on Saturday after going to Gagnatia bazaar to buy some things for his family.
“We are poor people and my two years daughter is crying all time for her father. My husband is not involved in politics but police arrested him and said he joined a campaign procession in support of Mujibul Haque on Friday,” Bithy said with tears. On the same way police arrested 10 farmers from nearby Sonapur village on Saturday.
The arrested persons’ family members told The New Nation that all of them are from very poor families. They have been arrested only for taking food from Mujibul Haque’s home on the day.
