Noor Hossain, his 5 associates acquitted in extortion case

Death sentence convict in the much-talked about Narayanganj seven-murder case Noor Hossain and his five associates were acquitted from an extortion case filed by a businessman.
Additional District and Sessions Judge of the Court No. 2 of Narayanganj Sabina Yasmin pronounced the verdict on Thursday after acquitting the accused from the case.
Hearing of six more cases against Noor Hossain also took place at the same court.
Apart from Noor Hossain, other acquitted accused were his nephew Councilor Shahjalal Badal, Shahjahan, Mortuza Zaman Churchil, Ali Mohammad and Bulbul.
Additional Public Prosecutor Jesmine Ahmed said Noor Hossain demanded Tk 5 lakh extortion from businessman Iqbal Hossain of Hirajhil area under Siddhirganj Police Station on May 30, 2013.
As Iqbal Hossain declined to pay the extortion, Noor Hossain and his associates vandalised his business establishment. Later, Iqbal Hossain filed an extortion case against six people including Noor Hossain with Siddhirganj Police Station. The court acquitted Noor Hossain and his five associates receiving no evidence of extortion against them.
She further said that hearing of six more cases related to possessing arms, drugs and extortion took place against Noor Hossain at the same court after the pronouncement of the verdict.
Of the cases, arguments were held in an extortion case and another arms case, while witnesses did not appear at the court in rest of the four cases.
The court fixed January 6 for next hearing on the six cases.
The court sources said Noor Hossain was brought at the court amid tight security measures from Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur on Thursday morning. Following the case proceedings, Noor Hossain was again taken to Kashimpur Jail.
It may be mentioned that police seized several illegal arms conducting raids into Noor Hossain’s Siddhirganj residence following the seven murders in 2014.
Police recommended filing three cases against Noor Hossain in connection with the recovery of arms.
On June 12, 2014, Noor Hossain, his brother Noor Uddin, their nephew Shahjalal Badal and Lokman were made accused in a case filed by autorickshaw driver Saidul Islam for seeking Tk 20,000 extortion from him.
Another case is related to the recovery of 2,900 bottles of phensidyl from the drug spot of Noor Hossain at Simrail. Sub-Inspector Shawkat Hossain filed the case against him.
Following the seven murders, the Narayanganj district administration cancelled the licensed pistol of Noor Hossain.
He was asked to submit the weapon. Instead of submitting the pistol, Noor Hossain fled the country. Another case was filed against him in connection with the incident.
