BSS, Dhaka :
Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta on Tuesday said though the constitution of the country permits holding of meetings and public rallies, it has not given anybody the right to distort history.
“Distortion of history of any country goes against its people. That’s why people of the country never accept distortion of history of the country. As BNP has taken stance in favour of distortion of history, it will not get people’s support,” he said.
Suranjit Sengupta, a senior parliamentarian of the ruling Awami League, said this while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city. The Nouka Samarthak Goshthy, a body of supporters of Awami League’s poll symbol ‘boat’, organised the discussion on current politics at the auditorium of the Diploma Engineers Institution at Kakrail.
Adviser of the organisation Haji Mohammad Selim, MP, chaired the discussion, also addressed, among others, by vice-president of Dhaka City Awami League Faezuddin Miah, central leader of Samyabadi Dal Haroon Chowdhury, former convener of Dhaka City (South) Awami Juba League Minhaz Uddin Mintu and secretary general of Bangabandhu Academy Humayun Kabir Mizi. Suranjit Sengupta said, “The constitution has not given anybody the right to distort history of country coming up with obnoxious remarks against Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. People of the country will never accept distortion of history in any way after 43 years of independence.”
“Bangabandhu has been recognised worldwide as the father of Bangalee nation. In a recent survey of BBC Bangabandhu has been elected as the greatest Bangalee of the millennium. Names of prominent Bangalee personalities like Rabindranath Tagore, Subhash Chandra Bose and others didn’t come up in the survey,” he said.
The senior Awami League leader said, “Staying in London Tarique Rahman passed remarks against Father of the Nation Bangabandhu like a reckless boy and his mother Begum Khaleda Zia supported her son’s comment. BNP has to revert to constitutional movement shunning the path of ill-politics.
Otherwise, all of their programmes will be rejected by the people in future, like they rejected its hartal (total shutdown) call of yesterday (Monday).” Suranjit Sengupta said that Begum Zia would have to bear the responsibilities of the school teacher who was killed in pelting of brickbats during yesterday’s hartal in Noakhali as she had given call for hartal. Expressing his satisfaction over the capital punishment handed to Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, the senior Awami League parliamentarian said, “Capital punishment was handed down by the International Crimes Tribunal against him (Azhar) for his involvement in committing crimes against humanity during the war of liberation”.
“Verdict in all the cases against war crimes will be handed down. None of the war criminals could be saved by hatching conspiracy. But, they can place their plea in the Appellate Division if they want to say anything about the verdict,” Suranjit Sengupta added.
