Barishal City polls: Nomination papers of AL, BNP candidates found valid

The nomination papers of candidates submitted by the different political parties for the Barishal City Corporation polls 2018 were scrutinized yesterday.
The nomination papers of Awami League Sadiq Abdullah, BNP’s Advocate Mujibur Rahman Sarwar, Communist Party Advocate AK Azad, Basd Dr. Manisha Chakraborty, Islamic Movement of Bangladesh, Maulana Obaidur Rahman Mahbub and AKM Mahbub Alam of Khelafat Majlis were declared valid on the first day, and those of Jatiya Party (Ershad) Iqbal Hossain Taposh and Jatiya Party’s rebel candidate Bashir Ahmed Jhunu were cancelled due to various reasons, Returning Officer Md. Mojibur Rahman told the media.
He said, Iqbal Hossain Tapos, is a loan defaulter. According to the Bangladesh Bank CIB reports a defaulter cannot get nomination. So, we cancelled the Iqbal Hossain’s nomination.
On the other hand, Bashir Ahmed Jhunu failed to prove his supporters, signature papers. There was only one real

signature where the commission has tried to communicate with five, rest was fake. For that, commission cancelled his nomination.
Appeals can be lodged against the commission’s decision on July 4 to the Divisional Commissioner. On the next three working days, the Divisional Commissioner will decide the appeals. Up to 5pm on July 9, the candidates will be able to withdraw their candidatures by appearing in the Returning Officer’s office.
Then the returning officer will make the final list of the candidates, said the Senior Returning Officer of Barishal Helal Uddin Khan.
In context, 159 candidates are in the Barisal City elections. Meanwhile, 38 candidates for Awami League and BNP including Mayor, 113 for general councillors and 38 for reserved ward councillors submitted nomination papers.
