BSS, Noakhali :
Noakhali was liberated from the clutches of the Pakistani occupation forces on December 7, 1971. Freedom loving people of the district started taking fresh air most happily in a free country after months of fighting.
At different times of 1971, the marauding occupation forces as well as the Rajakars massacred and looted at Sreepur, Ramharitaluk, Guptanka of the district headquarter, Kuripara and Gopalpur of Begumganj upazila, and Amishapara of Sonaimuri upazila. They shot to death 150 men, women and children, torched houses, shops and business establishments during the period.
After taking training in the country and India, the freedom fighters engaged them in the war against the heinous Pakistanis. Heavy gun battles took place at Bamni, Tal Mahmuder Hat and 12 No. Sluice gate of Companyganj upazila, Udoy Sadhur Hat (known as Odharhat), Karambox of Sadar Upazila, Fenakata Pool, Rajganj and Bagadiya of Begumganj upazila. Many freedom fighters were killed in the face to face fighting.
Failing to resist, the occupation forces started to leave Maijdee Primary Training Institute (PTI) Camp and Begumganj Technical High School Camp. When the Pakistani forces were crossing the Bagadiya Bridge on Begumganj-Laksam road, a group of freedom fighters led by Subedar Lutfur Rahman and Shamsul Hoque attacked them and many of the occupation forces were killed.
Recollecting the memories of the day, Commander of the freedom fighters, Mosharaf Hossain, Mia Mohammed Shajahan and Prof. Md. Hanif said they started the operation early in the morning on December 7 in order to free Noakhali from the enemies.
Mahfuzul Bari, 82, the accused No. 22 No. of the Agartala Conspiracy Case, said that with the joy of freedom of Noakhali, they set free all the inmates of the district jail.
Begum, a woman of ward No. 7 of Sreepur village of Noakhali Municipality, was imprisoned at the Rajakar camp and the Rajakars and the invaders tortured her inhumanly. Begum came home after Noakhali was freed on December 7.
According to her family, she became mad as a result of the brutal torture. She had not yet received the Birangana title after 43 years of independence. Her family also did not get any honour.
The graves of the martyrs and mass graves were not preserved after 43 years of independence.
