Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) Managing Director Taqsem A Khan on Monday claimed that there is no water supply crisis in Dhaka city.
He made this claim while addressing a press briefing over WASA’s preparation for dry season, held in the conference room of WASA bhaban in the city.
The WASA MD also assured that city dwellers would not face any water crisis in the upcoming summer season and even during the month of Ramzan.
“WASA has taken necessary steps for uninterrupted supply of water during the month of Ramzan. Besides, it also started receiving consumers’ complaints at Wasalink-16162 and at different complaint centers round the clock,” he said.
Replying a question, Taqsem, however, agreed that people of some areas in the city are not getting enough water due to technical glitches, not for short supply.
He said WASA has taken 100 percent preparation to deal with such technical glitches.
WASA has the capacity to generate 244 crore liters of water daily. Currently, WASA is supplying some 235 to 240 crore liters of water daily of which 49 crore liters are being sourced from surface water, he said.
Taqsem said WASA has prepared a plan to supply 70 percent of its total water from surface water sources in future.
“Two crore people are getting water from WASA legally while the government has taken a plan to bring the slum dwellers under it by the year 2018,” he said.
The WASA MD said, “The authorities concerned have taken several steps, including double connection of power supply and generator facilities to ensure uninterrupted water supply during frequent load shedding.”
Responding to a query about illegal occupation of different canals, Taqsem, said, “There are 26 canals under WASA in Dhaka city which are freed from the illegal encroachers. The authorities will continue the cleaning work of these canals.”
Talking about water logging problem during rainy season, he said, “The low lying areas around Dhaka city are filled up, causing sufferings to the city dwellers.”
