No Syndicate meeting in 15 private varsities Varsity act violated: UGC

M M Jasim :Although the syndicate of a university takes academic, administrative and such decision as serves varsity interest, 15 private universities did not summon any syndicate meeting in the year 2014.It was clearly a violation of Private University Act 2010, says University Grants Commission.According to the Act, “The Syndicate is the authority to take academic, administrative and other decisions as may be necessary, and preparing university budget, send it to the Board of Trustees for approval, approves examinations’ results, creates new posts for teachers and officials, and gives decision after analyzing the recommendation of Academic Council.” Director (Private University section) of UGC Mokhlesur Rahman told this correspondent that the 15 universities violated the Private University Act-2010 as they did not hold any syndicate meeting in 2014. They also ignored the UGC’s direction, he said. The 15 universities are International University of Business Agriculture and Technology, Bangladesh University, Leading University, IBAIS University, Atish Dipankar University of Science and Technology, Prime University, First Capital University of Bangladesh, Z H Sikder Science and Technology University, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences, Time University Bangladesh, Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib University, Fareast International University, Ranoda Proshad Shaha University, Global University Bangladesh and CCN Science and Technology University. The universities could not show any rational cause for not holding the syndicate meeting, according to the UGC’s annual report. The UGC sources said that it would request the Education Ministry to take steps against these universities for their horrible irregularities.
