Terming the killing of SP Babul Akhter’s wife as barbaric and against humankind, Additional Inspector General of Police (Admin) of Police Headquarters Mukhlesur Rahman said the killers will be brought to justice very soon.
“Of course the perpetrators will be brought under justice within a short time,” he said while talking to reporters at his office on Sunday. Unidentified miscreants gunned down Mahmuda Khanam, 33, the wife of Babul Akhter at the GEC intersection of the port city Chittagong on Sunday morning. Babul was promoted as police super just last month and attached to Dhaka police headquarters. Earlier he was additional deputy commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police.
The Additional IGP (Admin) said this is the first time that a family member of a police officer became a victim. “It was an innocent or soft target that had no relation with law and order. She was attacked as a member of a police family,” he said.
When asked whether the incident was occurred by militants or not, the Additional IGP (Admin) said the incident might be linked to militant activities as the victim’s husband is a senior police officer and he has been working against militants and their activities.
Replying to a question, Mukhlesur Rahman said the killing will not have any negative impact among the field level officers. “This incident will not impact our morale negatively, rather we will carry out our activities from our strongest position.”
A gang of three miscreants riding a motorcycle hit Mahmuda with their bike as she went to drop her son, Mahir Akhter, 7, for a bus to the Chittagong Cantonment Public School and College around 7.15am. As Mahmuda fell down after being hit by the bike, the gunmen opened fire on her, leaving her dead on the spot.
