14 more people drown, many missing: Sufferings mount in northern region as new areas go under water: 13 lakh affected: Army, BGB, Fire Service deployed in greater Rangpur

Huge floods engulfing country’s northern region are reported to have killed more 14 people and left lakhs of people stranded as the torrents swept away roads and houses and destroyed educational institutions.
The death toll in the devastating flood since Sunday rose to 40 as 14 more people drowned on Tuesday.
According to official sources, 21 people in Dinajpur, nine in Kurigram, five each in Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts have died from flood related incidents during the past three days.
Besides, around 25 people are still remained missing after unprecedented torrential rain paired by water flowing down from the upstream hilly areas caused rivers to burst their banks swamping in the country’s north, northwest and northeast regions.
Railway and road communications between the affected districts and rest
part of the country have remained suspended since Saturday.
The flood-hit people, who took shelter on the flood control embankment and in school and college buildings are still passing their days in great misery with their belongings, including domestic animals and poultry birds, for want of shelter, food and drinking water.
The river erosion and stagnant floodwater destroyed hectares of the farmers’ croplands, engulfed innumerable houses of the people.
Thousands of hectares of croplands have been transplanted and remained submerged, causing misfortune to innumerable farmers and commoners.
Meanwhile, flood situation deteriorated further in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj, Dinajpur, Lalmonirhat, Tangail and Natore districts on Tuesday.
The meteorological department said heavy downpours are expected to continue through this week.
Light to moderate rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barisal divisions with moderately heavy to heavy falls at places over the country.
Due to heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at many places in the hilly areas of Chittagong division, said a met office bulletin on Tuesday.
About 13 lakh people are affected as flood situation deteriorated in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj during the past 24 hours on Tuesday with improvement in Panchagarh, Thakurgaon, Nilphamari and Rangpur districts.
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner Kazi Hasan Ahmed said relief activities have been intensified further and members of Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh and Fire Service are assisting the civil administration and authorities in facing the situation.
According to Water Development Board (WDB) sources, the major rivers were still showing rising trend at reduced rate and flowing above danger mark (DM) at 13 points in Kurigram, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Dinajpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts on Tuesday.
Executive Engineer of WDB for Rangpur Engineer Mahbubur Rahman said water level of the Teesta continues falling at all points improving flood situation along its catchments during the past 24 hours yesterday.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer (DRRO) of Dinajpur Mokhlesur Rahman said 21 people died from flood-related incidents in the district where flood situation started improving from Tuesday with sharp recession in water level of the Punorvoba.
 “Over 1.14 lakh families are remaining affected by flood in the district where distribution of 300 tonnes rice, Tk 11 lakh and 2,000 packets dry foods continues,” he added.
Acting Kurigram DRRO Sheikh Sadi said eight people drowned and two others were missing in the district where flood has affected 1.23 lakh families and distribution of 651 tones rice, Tk 17.50 lakh and 2,000 packets of dry foods continues.
Nilphamari DRRO ATM Akhteruzzaman said five people drowned and one was missing in the district where the flood situation continues improving and distribution of 225 tonnes of rice, Tk 9.30 lakh and 2,000 packets of dry foods continues.
Acting Lalmonirhat DRRO Anisur Rahman said five people died from flood-related incidents in the district where distribution of 242 tonnes rice, Taka 8.75 lakh and 2,000 packets of dry foods still continues.
Gaibandha DRRO Idris Ali said distribution of 376 tonnes rice and Tk 8.60 lakh continues among flood-hit people in the district where 4,177 persons have so far been shifted to 69 safer shelters.
“Water levels of all major rivers were rising at reduced rate yesterday while sharp rise in water level of the Kartoa devoured flood control embankment at Kishamat Cherenga point under Polashbari upazila yesterday inundating fresh areas there,” he said.
