YET another bad example has been created by student’s wing of the ruling party at Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in Dinajpur. Some members of the Chhatra League reportedly vandalized the podium and other materials on Saturday night those were kept prepared for welcoming around 2200 freshers in the next morning. On their official induction to the University, the new students along with their guardians shockingly witnessed the scenario and left the venue with utter frustration when heard the university authority cancelled the programme. The most astonishing matter is that the university has no BCL committee. According to newspaper reports, the incident took place centring a circular over manpower recruitment, which resulted in demonstrating of Chhatra League on the campus, locking the administration building and vandalising the stage.
Of the new students, there were remarkable number of female students and most of them arrived there with their parents from different parts of the country. We don’t believe that university authorities were in dark about the possible hooliganism. But they were not prepared to face the situation. Not only that, the university authorities did not publish a notice in this regard or arrange an alternative for freshers. It was also learnt that the university authorities published a circular on its website to recruit manpower on Sunday, which angered many BCL leaders, who wanted the jobs. The BCL men had been pressurising the authorities for the last couple of months to recruit them, even though they do not meet many criteria to apply for those. Being failed to get recruited, they ultimately showed their muscle power foiling the freshers’ welcoming programme.
Can we ask — if there is no BCL committee officially announced then who are the persons challenging the university administration? This question must be answered. The role of District Administration and police also should be verified for not taking any preventive measures ahead of a big gathering. This kind of audacious activities should be treated with strong hand; no matter how powerful they are.
