Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam said that no fire control system was installed in the DNCC kitchen market at Gulshan.
“When this market caught fire on January 3, 2017, no fire suppression system was installed, and as history repeats itself, the market still did not still have that system,” the DNCC Mayor said it while visiting the gutted market at 8:10am on Saturday.
The recommendations made by the probe committee after the 2017 inferno, were not implemented, he added.
The Mayor said, “We wanted to build a permanent DNCC market here, but legal complications delayed the process. We will make a serious effort to resolve the legal issues and build a permanent DNCC market, which would feature a modern fire suppression system and other amenities.”
He further said, “The City Corporation will launch its scrutiny to ensure that all markets, shops and shopping malls have fire fighting systems installed.
“We will take legal action against building owners and their associations if evidence of negligence is found in this matter.”
