The BNP has not yet been able to announce its full committee although more than one and a half months elapsed since the holding of its 6th national council on March 19.
Observers count it as inherent weakness on the part of the party chief, who was delighted all powers to pick up suitable persons as committee members.
They say that two strategic reasons might have worked to delay announcement of the BNP’s full committee.
BNP high command at first wants to calm those leaders who will not be accommodated in the new committee. The other is that the party chairperson wants to draft a new agitation plan before announcement of the full committee. The high command feels they need more time to announce it. Some senior leaders said on condition of anonymity that the party chairperson is in a dilemma as to what to do.
The party so far has announced only 40 posts for new committee, after holding sixth national council on 19th March. Many of the leaders feel that they were fit for those posts. They and their supporters are taking preparation for staging demonstration. The BNP high-ups came to know about such discontent. They are aware about the probable committee centric unrest inside the party. The party high command is now delaying the announcement to avoid any type of indiscipline inside the party about the committee.
BNP standing committee member Brigadier General (rtd) ASM Hannan Shah told The New Nation, ” Party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia forms the committee. It is very important matter. She wants to accommodate every proven leaders in the committee. So it may cosume some more time.”
When asked about any possible agitation, Hannan Shah said, “It is very hot summer now. It is not suitable time for movement. After the coming Ramzan, the time and date of the agitation will be anounced.”
BNP Joint Secretary General Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal told The New Nation, ” Our Chairperson is trying to make the BNP a better organisation. She never does any injustice to those who were active in the party’s movements. The Chairperson is judging all the leaders’ past activities to give them the appropriate places in the coming committee. It might take some times.”
“After forming new committee, the high command will decide when and how the fresh movement will start,” he said.
One of the senior leaders said preferring anonymity that the high command is now busy with selecting tested men. ” If some leaders feel deprived, then they and all of their supporters may organise protest processions in front the party office. It will be harmful for the party’s image. Such type of activities will make the organisation weak,” he said.
Another leader said, party chairperson is now discussing with her close senior leaders everyday about the future committee. She asked the leaders not to omit the proven and capable leaders from new committee.
“After announcement of our full-fledged committee, the next course of action will be to start a fresh movement. But the situation is not in our favour to start new agitation now. Many of our leaders are in jail. Many of them are on the run as they are accused in various cases. In such condition, the party is not ready to start new phase of movement,” said one senior leader of the party.
Some leaders said, the party high ups thinks that it is not suitable time to start fresh agitation. The holy Ramadan is near to doorsteps. After Ramadan, the party may anounce its fresh movement demanding fresh national election under non-partisan government.
