Mahmudur Rahman :
The ruling party Awami League (AL) is thinking to keep pace with time as the top party leaders now are determined to capture the Jatiya Party (JP) fort through ballots, party insiders said.
AL General Secretary Obaidul Quader several times made it clear there will be no consensus with JP about Rangpur-3
parliamentary seat. So far 16 local AL leaders have collected nomination forms to contest the by-election. Such interest for a seat was quite unprecedented.
On the other hand, Rangpur election is crucial for Jatiya Party as its future politics depends on the election results.
The Rangpur-3 seat fell vacant with the death of JP founder HM Ershad. He has been elected from this seat since 1991. The by-election is to be held on October 5. So far five candidates from Jatiya Party, 16 from Awami League and five from the BNP have collected nomination forms.
For the past 30 years, the Rangpur sadar constituency has been controlled by HM Ershad. This made Rangpur their stronghold all these years, but times have changed. The local Awami League is now determined to take over the JP fort.
The ruling party’s General Secretary Obaidul Quader believes that Awami league candidate will win .So Awami League alone will contest.
Awami league Office Secretary Dr. Abdus Shubhan Golap told The New Nation that the final decision depends on Party’s President Sheikh Hasina.
AL Assistant Publication Secretary Aminul Islam Amin told The New Nation that educated voters will support AL.
When nomination was collected, Rangpur district AL Treasurer Abul Kasem told Journalists “Jatiya Party faded away long ago, but AL is alive. Now there is no reason to give JP walkover. The party won’t survive in the long run.”
Rangpur AL leaders are putting pressure on the party’s central leadership not to come to any sort of understanding with JP over the Rangpur by-election.
