Chattogram Bureau :

Permanent-temporary hawkers on the sidewalk. In some places the sidewalks are occupied by the goods of the shops adjacent to the sidewalks. Various illegal establishments have been set up by occupying canals and ditches. This scene is from Chittagong city. This is a daily scenario of most parts of the city.
However, it is the responsibility of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) to make the roads and sidewalks free from illegal occupation and to facilitate the smooth movement of vehicles and the general public. The organization also has powers in this regard as per the Local Government (City Corporation) Act-2009. CCC has not been able to fully implement the law for a long time. So the city dwellers were not relieved. However, this time CCC is being strict in implementing the law. The company is taking the field against the illegal occupiers who are depriving the civil rights. Deputy Chief Cleaning Officer Mohammad Morshedul Alam Chowdhury has been given the responsibility for this.
According to an office order signed by Khalid Mahmood, secretary of CCC on September 2, ‘Necessary measures under Sections 16.9 and 18.10 of the Third Schedule to the Local Government Act against illegal occupants of various roads, sidewalks, drains, lands, alleys, parks, etc. under the City Corporation.
Confirming the matter, City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury said there would be no compromise with the illegal occupants. They will not be given any discount. People will walk on the sidewalk. If the drains are free from occupation, the normal flow of water will be fine. So there is no chance to give a discount here. We will take action only where roads and sidewalks are illegally occupied.
