Staff Reporter :
The review petition of war crimes convict Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami has been included in the today (Sunday)’s hearing list of the Supreme Court.
The review petition has been put on the cause list at No 19. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha will hear the petition.
Earlier on April 3, the Supreme Court deferred the hearing for a week on the review petition of the Jamaat Chief.
On March 29, Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami filed the review petition praying to acquit him of all the charges brought against him. He mentioned 46 grounds in the 70-page petition in favour of his claim.
Meanwhile, Nizami’s family members met him at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Thursday.
On October 29 in 2014, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 handed down the death penalty to Nizami on four charges of war crimes, including murdering intellectuals during the Liberation War in 1971. The 71-year-old Maulana Nizami was also awarded life imprisonment on account of four other charges.
The Supreme Court on January 6 this year upheld the death sentence on three charges and life term imprisonment on two other charges.
On March 15, the apex court released the full verdict. The ICT issued death warrant for Nizami hours after the SC had released its full verdict. The following day, the jail authorities read out the judgement before the convict.
