National Human Rights Commission Chairman (NHRC) Mizanur Rahman has said the chain of command of police administration has broken down resulting in slide in human rights, and law and order situations in the country.
“It seems, the chain of command of police has broken down. Instead of arresting the real culprits, they (police) are repressing the general people,” he told reporters while visiting former Dhaka University teacher Prof. Mahbub Ullah at hospital in the city on Monday.
The NHRC chief said that the Home Minister’s directives are not working although he asked the police station concerned to take action against the perpetrators as per law.
Prof Mahbub Ullah, who was physically assaulted by some miscreants on the Supreme Court premises on Saturday, is now undergoing treatment at Labaid Specialised Hospital.
Urging the Inspector General of Police, the NHRC chief said, “I request you (IGP) with due respect, please order the police force so that they can take action according to people’s complaints.”
Terming Mahbub Ullah a ‘reserved and descent person’, Mizanur Rahman said that attack on such a person on the SC premises means ‘no intellectual is safe now.’
“Intellectuals of a country have the right to give their opinions on any issue. It cannot bode well for democracy when there are attempts to restrict this right,” he added.
Also urging the state and the law enforcing agencies to remain alert, the NHRC chairman said. “It is not acceptable that a person will be physically assaulted for expressing his own opinions”.
Talking to the reporters, Prof Mahbubullah said that he suffered injuries in the right eye but no internal damage has been found.
“I’m not involved in any politics. I even don’t know which of my opinion has hurt the attackers,” he said.
He also said that he has no idea about the identity of his attackers or their motive.
