Staff Reporter :
Chairman of National Human Right Commission Kazi Reazul Hoque in a letter to home minister Asaduzzaman Khan has asked him to ensure human rights of the people accused or suspected of drug dealing.
He also called on the minister to bring the drug peddlers to justice and ensure exemplary punishment.
The letter read, ‘The primary protector of basic rights of the people is the state. So the state and all government agencies are bound to uphold and ensure the rights protected in the constitution.’
He said the recent incidents of deaths of reported drug peddlers and injury of members of law enforcement agencies during the drives against narcotics have become a matter of concern across the country.
The letter read, ‘The article 35(3) of the constitution mandates all accused of criminal offences to get open and speedy justice by an independent and neutral court established by the law.

So all agencies involved with implementation of the article are responsible for ensuring punishment of accused after bringing them under the purview of law.’
The commission chairman asked the home minister to take measures on emergency basis to consider the human rights issues of the accused and protect their rights mentioned in the constitution.
