Nezampur Union Parishad (UP) under Nachol Upazila of Chapai Nawabganj district achieved significant success to bring hardcore poor people and person with disabilities under improved and sustainable sanitation services.
Chairman of the UP Abdul Awal said, as part of this move the UP is providing improved and sustainable off-set latrine among hardcore poor people instead of direct pit latrine using the Government allocation. The UP also provided disabled-friendly latrine for person with disabilities.
Of the total 28,000 population of Nezampur UP, 2500 are belonging to hardcore poor. The UP has a total of 6434 households. More than 95 percent households have their own sanitary latrines and remaining households are using shared latrine. There is no of open defecation in the UP.
But the sanitation scenario of Nezampur UP was very poor even one decades back. Open defecation was very common in the UP that caused different types of intestinal diseases, particularly diarrhoea. The trend of open defecation was reducing at a time due to community-led total sanitation movement.
The chairman pointed out that sanitation scenario had improved further when the Government of Bangladesh launched National Sanitation Campaign in October 2003. The sanitation coverage of the UP was below 30 percent before 2003. In 2007, the latrine coverage of the UP reached to almost 100%.
The UP is now promoting sustainable off-set latrine instead of pit latrine. The Chairman said that they came to know about the usefulness of sustainable off-sent latrine from Chunarughat upazila in Habiganj district. Water and Sanitation Program (WSP) of the World Bank piloted Sanitation Marketing Projects in the upazila and achieved a remarkable success in promoting improved, comfortable and sustainable latrine.
“After visiting Chunarughat we can understand that we were in the complete darkness about the importance of sanitary latrine. We learned about off-set latrine and its effectiveness of sustainability and comfort”.
Nezampur UP, as part of inclusive sanitation services, initiated disabled-friendly sanitary latrine for persons with disabilities. Already three such latrines were installed in the UP.
