100 kg hemp recovered in C’nawabganj

Chapainawabganj Narcotics Control Office on Thursday recovered 100 kg of hemp from Komlakantapur Ghatpara area under Shibganj upazila of the district. Assistant Director of Chapainawabganj Narcotics Control Department Alamgir Hossain said a team of the department raided the area this morning and seized a jeep. After searching the jeep the narcotics control officials found five bags of hemp worth Taka 15 lakh. The jeep was seized and a case was filed with Shibganj Thana in this connection.
Robbers loot valuables from Satkhira house

Robbers looted valuables from the house of a college teacher near Alia Madrasha in the district town early Friday. Quoting the victims, police said 8/10 robbers identifying themselves as police members asked Abdul Hamid, a teacher of Kumira Women’s College, to open the door around 2 am. When he opened the door, robbers took the house inmates hostage at gun point and looted valuables, including eight tolas of gold ornaments and Tk 50,000 cash, and left the place with the booty. On information, police visited the spot.
AL office torched in Jessore
BENAPOLE: Miscreants set the local Awami League office afire at Badamtala Bazar in Bakra union of Jhikorgachha upazila of Jessore district early Friday. Party sources said miscreants set fire to the no 5 ward unit Awami League office at Matshia village in the dead of night. The fire also gutted down a shop of one Alauddin adjacent to the AL office.
On information, Nazrul Islam, in-charge of Bakra police camp, visited the spot, reports UNB.
Govt takes initiative to re-construct bridge over Manash river
GAIBANDHA: An initiative has been taken by the government to re-construct a 44-metre length PC (Pre-Stressed Concrete) girder bridge over the Manash River at Dariapur bazaar on Gaibandha-Sundarganj Road under Sadar upazila. The construction farm Eunus & Brothers is constructing the bridge at the direct supervision of Roads and Highways Department (RHD) at a cost of Tk 59 million while the government of Bangladesh is providing the fund, office sources said. At present, the diversion road is being built on the temporary basis at eastern side of the bridge to help the people across the river and move their vehicles in an alternative way, said an official of the department. With the completion of the work of the diversion road, the re-construction work of the bridge would start, he said adding that the local lawmaker is likely to inaugurate the work shortly as the chief guest. Executive engineer of RHD Mahbubul Alam Khan said the work was expected to be finished by June 30, 2017, and a long standing demand of the locals would be fulfilled, reports BSS.
Pheromone traps promotion can ensure chemical-free foods
RAJSHAHI: Large-scale promotion of pheromone traps in farming system could be the effective means of harvesting crops freed from pesticides and harmful chemicals as safe food is very important for sound public health. Field level agricultural officials and other staffs concerned should come forward and work together so that the farmers could be motivated towards using eco-friendly traps in managing pests. Administrative and agricultural officials made these observations while visiting a pheromone trap demonstration plot at Boroikuthi area under Mohanpur Upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has introduced the programme throughout the district to detect the harmful insects in the Aman fields and use the insecticides accordingly to save the crops, reports BSS.
