World Water Day observed in Sylhet

The World Water Day was observed in the Sylhet district today with the theme ‘water and jobs’. BELA with the help of SRW arranged rally, Human Chain and discussion meeting marking the Day. Blast Coordinator Eirfanuzzamn Chawdhury, Shohidul Islam Shahin, Jamil Ahmed Chawdhury, Bodrul Ahmed Chawdhury, BELA Coordinator Shah Shaheda, Abdul Korim Kim, Delwar attended the meeting. The speakers said Bangladesh is now the highest irrigation water using country in the world. They said moonsoon rainfall is decreasing day by day and underground water level is falling. On the other hand, cost of irrigation is increasing rapidly. Boro irrigation cost has increased by two times in 10 years.  
Bus driver, helper killed in Habiganj road crash
HABIGANJ: A bus driver and his assistant were killed and 10 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses in Karanji Bridge area of Bahubal upazila on Friday. Mosharraf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Bahubal Police Station, said the accident took place in the area around 7:30 am when a Sylhet-bound ‘Boisakhi Paribahan’ bus from Dhaka collided head-on with a local bus, leaving the local bus driver and helper killed on the spot and 10 others injured. Of the injured, two were rushed to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. On information, police sent the bodies to local hospital morgue for autopsy, reports UNB.
Husband gets life for killing wife in Sirajganj

A court here on Thursday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment for killing his wife in 2011. Sirajganj District and Sessions Judge Jafrol Hasan also filed Al Amin,40, son of Joynal in Kazipur upazila, Tk10,000, in default, to suffer six months more of jail. According to the prosecution, Al Amin beat his wife Farida Khatun, 30, to death over a family feud on May 8, 2011. Khoka Sheikh, father of Farida, filed a murder case. After examining records and witnesses, Judge Jafrol Hasan handed down the verdict.
Coriander production satisfactory in Panchagarh
PANCHAGARH: The coriander growers in different char areas of the district are happy over the production this year and they are earning handsome profit. Sources said farming of the important kitchen item is getting popular among the farmers in the char areas as its production cost is lower and profit is higher than the other crops. The growers are passing busy time for harvesting the produce and also delighted to achieve good yield of it. Witnessing satisfactory production and good price, many farmers are showing their interest to cultivate it on a large scale next year. Fajol Mia, a farmer of char Nutonbandar under Boda upazila said, he has cultivated it on 33 decimal of land this season and harvested 12 maunds of produce and earned Tk 9,000. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) of Panchagarh official sources said the crop is being grown plentifully in char areas as the land are very suitable for the cultivation of the crop, reports BSS.
Body recovered in Dinajpur

Police recovered an unidentified body of a man from a paddy field of Maddhabasudebpur in Hakimpur upazila here yesterday. Officer in charge of Hakimpur Police Mokhlesur Rahman said being informed, police rushed to the spot, recovered the body of a man aged about 45 years, and sent it to Dinajpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
World TB Day observed in Manikganj

The World Tuberculosis (TB) Day was observed here on Thursday with various programmes under the auspices of Civil Surgeon office. On this occasion a colourful rally was brought out in the district town which paraded the main roads of the town and ended at the Civil Surgeon Office. To mark the day, a discussion meeting was held at Manikganj District Civil Surgeon Office conference room. The function was presided over by Dr Md Imran Ali, Civil Surgeon, Manikganj. Gazi Asaduzzaman Kabir, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Gen) was present in the function as the chief guest, while Alimuzzaman Mia, Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension and Dr Ranjit Kumar Sarker, Deputy Director, Health and Family Welfare, were present as the special guests.
