A female owner of a private hospital and diagnostic center was awarded six months jail term on charge of attempt to sell a three-day old baby in the city’s Sabujbagh area.
Sarwar Alam, Executive Magistrate of RAB Headquarters, announced the punishment on Saturday afternoon.
The accused has been identified as Anwara Akter, owner of Talukder Hospital and Diagnostic Center at Nandipara under Sabujbagh Police Station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
The baby has been admitted to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) in a critical condition, RAB official said in a press briefing at Tikatoly. RAB-3 Operation Officer Abdul Karim said, “Eighteen year old Sabina Begum, wife of one Sohel from Melandah thana in Jamalpur district, delivered a baby through caesarean operation at Talukder Hospital and Diagnostic Center on April 20.
But as the couple is poor and unable to maintain the new born baby, she decided sell him to any barren couple.
Learning it, hospital owner Anwara was conspiring to sell the baby.
On information, a team of RAB-3 conducted a drive in the hospital and rescued the baby. The RAB members also detained the hospital owner and three other staff for interrogation in this connection.”
After query, Sarwar Alam, Executive Magistrate of RAB awarded six months jail to Anwara Akter, the RAB official said. The mother of the baby was also interrogated in this connection, he said.  
RAB rescued three stolen babies from the city’s different areas. One of them was rescued from Shajahanpur on Februay 12 this year, and the other two from DMCH on December 15 and August 21 of 2014 respectively.
