Greens’ bicycle rally against Surma pollution

Different environmental organisations based in Sylhet organised a bicycle rally in the city on Thursday to raise awareness against pollution of the Surma and other rivers. Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (Bapa), Water Keeper Alliance’s ‘Surma River Water Keeper’ and cyclists’s organisation ‘Critical Mass’ jointly organised the two-hour long cycling programme marking International Day of Action for Rivers ( which is observed on March 14). Around 200 cyclists took part in the programme that started in the Kin Bridge area on the bank of the Surma River at 4pm. Bapa Sylhet unit general secretary Abdul Karim presided over the programme. The cyclists marched through Kazir Bazar Bridge, Khojar Khola in Dakkhin Surma upazila, Boroikandi, Muktijoddha Chattar, Humayun Rashid Chattar, Mendibag More, Masudighir Par and Central Shaheed Minar areas.
8,000 kg of jatka seized in Barisal

A joint team of fisheries department and Coast Guard in a drive seized 8,000 kg of jatka (small hilsa) and 3,000 metres of current net from Taltali area of the district yesterday. A team of Coast Guard and fisheries department conducted the drive in a boat in Kirtankhola river on the basis of secret information and found 52 drums filled with 8 thousand kg of banned small hilsa. The staff of the boat and owner of jatka fled from the scene sensing the presence of the team, the Coast Guard sources said.
DC visits Ultra Poor Project

Deputy Commissioner of Rangpur, Rahat Anowar along with District Livestock Officer Dr. Md. Mahbubul Alom visited the activities Targeting the Ultra Poor Project of BRAC at Kanpara and Shahbajpur Mallipara of Rajendrapur union under Sadar upazila on Monday. During the visit they exchanged views with the beneficiaries of TUP project. They also lauded the activities of Ultra Poor project of brac. It was also disclosed that a total of 29599 ultra poor people were given cattle, poultry nursery business and small business facility from the year 2002 to till now in the district. Among others Deputy Director of Social Service department Nazmun Nahar Begum, Deputy director Youth development department Md. Dilgir Alom and BRAC district officials were present on the occasion.
One held with contraband tablets
DINAJPUR: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a person from Birampur railghunti area in sadar upazila here yesterday morning and seized 70,000 pieces of cow fattening tablets from his possession. The arrested person was identified as Mohon Deb, 35, son of Roydeb of Chelopara under sadar upazila of Bogra district. BGB sources said on a tip off, a team of BGB raided the area and arrested him with the tablets. Besides, the BGB team seized 318 bottles of phensidyl and 37 kg cumin from a train at Hili railway station today at 10:30 am, reports BSS.
Mobile court convicts poly traders
FARIDPUR: A mobile court convicted five polythene traders and awarded six months simple imprisonment each in Kala Mridha bazar under Bhanga upazilla of the district yesterday.
According to official sources, acting on a tip- off members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-8 led by ASP Md. Hafizul Islam carried on a raid in Kala Mridha bazar under Bhanga upazilla where some traders stored huge quantity of contraband polythene bags. After searching the market the RAB members recovered 16 lakh kilograms of polythene from five stores owned by Bashudev Banik, 52, Rezaul, 35, Mohammad Ali,42, Motaleb Fakir,45, and Binoy Saha,24, reports BSS..
720-kg jatka, current net seized
MUNSHIGANJ: Members of Bangladesh Coast Guard in a drive seized 720-kg of jatka (small hilsa fish) and 20,000-metre current net from a launch on the Meghna river in Gazaria upazila of the district on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, a team of coast guard halted a Dhaka-bound launch ‘MV Jamal-1’ and seized the jatka and current net searching the launch, Coast Guard sources said., reports BSS.
