Two firearm traders detained in Chapainawabgonj

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two alleged firearm traders with a foreign pistol and some ammunitions from Moharajpur area in the district town early hours today, RAB sources said here yesterday. The arrested were identified as Selim Hossain, 25, and Somel Ali, 28. On a tip-off, a team of the elite forces carried out a drive in the area under Sadar Upazila of the town around 1.30 am and arrested them with a pistol, two magazines and a bullet. Quoting the confessional statement the sources said the arrested were professional firearms businessmen.A case was recorded with the police station concerned in this connection. The arrested were handed over to police with the seized firearm and ammunition.
Ekushey Book Fair begins in Meherpur
MEHERPUR: A three-day Amar Ekushey Book Fair began at Shaheed Samsuzzoha Nagar Udyan of the district on Friday evening. Additional Deputy Commissioner Khairul Hasan inaugurated the fair as the chief guest. President of Bangladesh Book Publishers and Sellers Association in Meherpur ASM Farid Uddin and General Secretary Saidur Hasan Ripon were present in the function. A total of 14 book stalls were set up in the book fair, reports BSS.
Free eye camp held in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR : A day- long free eye camp for the poor was held at Raghunathpur Dighuli village in Jamalpur Sadar upazila on Friday. Bandhu Unnoyan Sangstha, a non-government organization, arranged the eye camp at Khalilur Rahman high school in the village .Doctors at the camp treated about 500 patients and prescribed medicines for them free of cost. They also selected cataract patients for operation at Jamalpur General Hospital. Founder of the school Khalilur Rahman and President of Bandhu Unnayan Sangstha, Md. Abdul Wadud were present among others at the camp, reports BSS.
2 women held with 500 Yaba pills in Satkhira

Police in a drive arrested two alleged female drug peddlers along with 500 pieces of Yaba tablets from Kadamtala More in Kaliganj upazila on Friday night. Amal Kumar Roy, sub-inspector of Kaliganj Police Station, said acting on secret information, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Sazida Begum, 41, wife of Ramzan Ali, and Hazera Khatun, 24, daughter of Esha Ali of Ghona Kashempur village in the upazila, in possession of 500 pieces of Yaba tablets around 8:30 pm. A case was filed in this connection.
Early marriage foiled, 2 jailed in Jessore

A mobile court here sentenced two people to seven days’ jail each for making arrangement of marriage of an underage girl at Patbari village in Sharsha upazila of Jessore on Friday night. Sub-inspector of Benapole Police Station Mafijur Rahman said on information that an underage female madrasah student was set to be married off in the area on Friday, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdus Salam, also executive magistrate, went to the function arranged at the girl’s house.The UNO then set up a mobile court at the house and handed down seven days’ jail term each to Sohrab Hossain,34, uncle of the bride, and Maminur Rahman, 55, her grandfather.
27,000 Yaba pills recovered in Comilla

Police recovered 27,000 pieces of Yaba tablet from Baburchi area on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Chauddagram upazila on Friday night. Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and challenged a Comilla-bound motorcycle carrying two people from Feni at about 8:30 pm, said officer-in-charge of Chauddagram Police Station Mohammad Farhad. The duo managed to flee leaving behind a bag containing 27,000 pieces of Yaba tablet. Later police recovered the Yaba tablets from the bag.
A case was filed in this connection.
