AL bags two mayoral posts in Bagerhat

Bangladesh Awami League nominated candidate Khan Habibur Rahman was elected Mayor of Bagerhat Pourashava for consecutive third times unofficially in the election held on December 30 after a keen contest with AL rebel candidate Mina Hasibul Hasan Shipon, Khan Habibur Rahman captured 9881 votes while Mina Hsibur Hasan bagged 9737 votes. During the election no untoward incident took place in the Porashava area. The elected councilors are (1) Sardar Shamim Ahsan, (2) Md. Nasir Uddin, (3) Ali Azam Molla, (4) Moniruzzaman Moni, (5) Shaikh Abul Hashem Shipon, (6) Al-haj Abdul Baki Talukdar, (7) Molla Md. Shahnur Dolon, (8) Shaikh Md. Masum and (9) Md.Faruk Talukdar. Asma Aktar, Tania Khatun and Sharifa Aktar Swapna were elected councilors from women reserved seats. 5 out of total 12 councilors are new faces.
2 SUST teachers get VC Award

The authority of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Wednesday awarded “Vice-Chancellor Award” to two teachers of the university. The award was introduced under the University Research Centre (URC). Dr Sakhawat Hossain of Physics department and Monir Uddin Ahmed of Economics department have been awarded for their outstanding performance in basic research in their respective fields. SUST VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan handed over certificate and prize money at the third annual conference on ‘Research Findings-2015’ at the mini auditorium on the campus’
Miladunnabi observed in Gouripur

The holy Eid-e-Milad-unnabi, marking the birth and death anniversary of Prophet Hazrat Mohammad was observed in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh on Friday with due religious fervour and solemnity .On this day in 570, the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awal of the Hijri calendar, Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) as the last Prophet of Islam was born in Makkah in Saudi Arabia with divine blessings and messages of peace for mankind. He also passed away on the same day in 632 AD. Comprehensive arrangements were made to observe Eid Milad-un-Nabi on Friday. Mosques and religious institutions in this upazila were illuminated to mark the occasion with religious fervour. Milad processions were taken out in various parts of this upazila. Meanwhile, police personnel have been deployed to ensure peace and religious harmony on the occasion.
‘JMB man’ held in C’nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Police in a drive arrested a suspected member of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from Nizampur area in Nachole upazila on Saturday morning. The arrestee was identified as Masum,25 , son of Abdul Gafur, a resident of Nizampur railway station area. Fasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Nachole Police Station, said being tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 10am and arrested Masum, reports UNB.
2 children drown in Jessore
BENAPOLE (Jessore): Two minor children drowned in a water body at Chandra village in Keshabpur upazila of Jessore district on Friday. The deceased were identified as Siam, 5, son of Khokon Gazi, and Samir Hossain, 4, son of Abdul Alim, a resident of the village. Locals said Siam and Samir slipped into the water body and drowned while they were playing near their house around 11 am. Later after a frantic search local people recovered floating bodies of the two children, reports UNB.
