3-day Jibanananda Fair starts in Barisal

The three-day long second ‘ Sahitya Sammilon and Jibanananda-Mela’14’ has started at his ancestral town Barisal on Friday. Jatiya Kobita Parishad Barisal unit organised the literary conference and the fair. Dr.Hayat Mahmud, noted literary personality, inaugurated the fair by paying tributes on the portrait of the poet, hoisting national flag singing National Anthem and flying festoon at Amritalal Dey College. Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner Barisal was the chief guest of the inaugural session. A children-juvenile painting competition was held there. Then a procession from the college to the ‘Jibanananda Milonaeton’ , Poet Jibanananda Memorial Hall, at the parental house of the poet on Kobi Jibanananda Das Sarak in the city and held a writer’s get-together. A discussion meeting, reception to the socio-cultural-literary personalities, recitation of poems, cultural functions held at the college in the second session of the day presided over by Principal Tapankar Chakraborty. Imdadul Haque, director Janata Bank, was chief guest of this session and recitation accorded to Dwijen Sharma, Nikhil Sen, Subrata Barua, Badiur Rahman, Khairul Alam Sabuj, and Dr. Kajal Bandopadhya. Aroop Talukdar, Dipankar Chakraborty, Moni Hairdar, Partha Sharathi participated in the discussion.The speakers and participants of the programmes said during the later half of the twentieth century, Jibanananda Das emerged as the most popular poet of modern Bengali literature. There have been many other poets in the 20th century who are equally powerful but stand somewhat apart from the mainstream. Popularity apart, Jibanananda had distinguished himself as an extraordinary poet presenting a paradigm hitherto unknown.  
Independence Day observed at Ranisonkail

The Independence and National Day was observed at Ranisonkail in Thakurgaon district. On that day at 12.01 minute, woman MP Selina Jahan Lita with Upazila administration and other organisations placed wreaths to Khunia Dighi, the Independence war memorial. In the morning a discussion meeting was held on the same premises. Thakurgaon-3 M.P. Prof. Yeasin Ali was the chief guest with UNO Ashraful Islam. Woman M.P. Selina Jahan Lita, Upazila Chairman Saidul Haque, Ex-Muktijoddhya Commander Serajul Islam, Principal Tajul Islam, OC Abdul Monaem and Kendrio Chhatra League Vice President Shariar Azam Munna were present as special guests.
3 held with 570 Morphine injection in Barisal

Detective branch of Barisal Metropolitan Police arrested three persons including a drugstore owner, staff and a customer in the city for illegal storing and selling Morphine injections. Bhaskar Saha, assistant commissioner DB of BMP, said on basis of secret information they raided Zamal Medical Hall, a medicine shop at the Sadar Road area of the city on Friday night. Searching the shop police recovered 570 ampoules of Morphine injections from there. Dilip Das, 58, owner, Rupam Das, 40, staff of the medicine shop, Russell Khalifa, 25, their client, arrested in this connection. A case was lodged against the arrestees on Saturday under narcotic control act for trading Morphine to the drug addicts at high rate violating restrictions against selling without prescription of licensed physician, police sources said. Morphine is a narcotic pain reliever used to treat moderate to severe pain and sold under nearly a hundred trade names. It used as a narcotic by addicts with serious drug affects like shallow breathing, slow heartbeat, stiff muscles, seizure (convulsions), clammy skin, unusual thoughts or behavior, severe weakness, urinating less than usual or not at all, pale skin, feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate, trouble concentrating; easy bruising, unusual bleeding (nose, mouth, vagina, or rectum), purple or red pinpoint spots under skin etc, said Dr. Rabin Ghosh, one of the expert in treating drug addicts.
Seminar held in Chapainawabganj

A seminar on ‘Creating awareness in reducing road accidents’ was held at the conference room of the deputy commissioner of Chapainawabganj on Friday. Chapainawabganj district office of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) arranged the seminar with the association of Chapainawabganj district administration. It was held with assistant director of BRTA Swadesh Kumar Das in the chair. Among others, additional district magistrate (ADM) of Chapainawabganj Md. Ashraful Islam as chief guest, additional superintendent of police Al Mamun, president of Chapainawabganj District Minibus Owners Group Monwarul Islam Dalim, president of Chapainawabganj District Truck Owners Group Aminul Islam Sentu and vehicle inspector of BRTA Md. Quamruzzaman spoke on the occasion. The speakers stressed on abiding by traffic rules and increasing the efficiency of the professional drivers for reducing road accidents. They also asked the drivers of all vehicles not to use mobile phones during driving in order to avoid accidents.Before this, a colourful rally was taken out in the town. BRTA officials, transport owners, drivers and labourers participated in the programmes.
