One killed over land dispute in C’nawabganj

One person was killed allegedly by his relatives over a disputed land at Palsha village under Chapainawabganj sadar upazila on Thursday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Jashim, 30, son of Ameer Hossain of Beldanga village under Nachole upazila of Chapainawabganj district. Police arrested two persons including a woman in this connection. They are the victim’s brother in law (shalok) Khairul Islam, 45 and his wife Laila, 32 of Palsha village of the sadar upazila. OC of Chapainawabganj sadar thana Jashim Uddin said, Jashim was returning home from Chapainawabganj by a bus. As the bus reached Palsha at around 1 pm, a group of people took him forcibly out of the bus and beat him up to death. He had a conflict over the possession of a piece of land with his brother in law, he added. Being informed, police rushed to the spot, recovered the dead body and sent it to Chapainawabganj sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.

Bangladesh Chhatra Union on Thursday held day-long 21st district conference at Barisal Ashwini Kumar Hall. The conference inaugurated by Nikhil Sen, senior cultural personality, was presided over by Antar Chakraborty, convener and conducted by Dipangkar Kundu, joint convener of district BCU. Among others Comrade Abdul Mannan of CPB, A K Azad of Trade Union Kendra, Principal Mizanur Rahman Selim, educationist, Khan Asaduzzaman Masum, Rezaul Karim Khokan, Laki Aktar, Rabindranath Majhi, Sharmin Jahan Popy, leaders of BCU and organizers of Gano Jagoran Mancha, addressed the inaugural session. The speakers called to resist anti-liberation and communal forces at every sphere of life and society. They also emphasized on maintaining healthy academic atmosphere, moral and disciplinary attitudes at the educational institutions to create good citizenship and good governances in the country.
Tk 2 crore Indian sarees recovered at Benapole
BENAPOLE: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members seized contraband Indian sarees worth Tk 2 crore from Sadipur border here on Friday. Jessore-26 BGB commanding officer Lt Colonel Matiur Rahman said acting on a tip-off, a BGB patrol team intercepted a covered van early in the morning and seized the sarees. The driver of the covered van and his helper, however, fled the scene, he said. The seized sarees were deposited to the local customs office, reports UNB.
50 injured in B’baria clashes
BRAHMANBARIA: At least 50 people were injured in two separate clashes in Brahmanbaria on Thursday. Police brought the situation under control by lobbing teargas canisters and firing rubber bullets. At Vuishor village in Sarail upazila, followers of rivals Faijullah and Hebju Mia locked in a clash over watering arable land. They used sharp weapons. Informed, police reached the spot and fired 22 rounds of rubber bullets and lobbed five rounds of teargas shells to disperse the clashers. Sarail Police Station officer-in-charge Ali Arshad said six people were held from the scene. Meanwhile, at Khariala village of Ashuganj, followers of Gafur Mia and Mizan Mia clashed using sharp local weapons over the possession of a piece of land. At least 20 people were injured in the hour-long clash. Of the injured, eight were admitted to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospial while the others given first aid.
