Anti-drug campaign held in Netrakona

An extra-ordinary anti-drug campaigning programme was held inside of Netrakona district jail here on Sunday last. Jail office sources said, Netrakona district administration and the district jail authority jointly designed the anti-drug campaigning programme with aview to create awareness among the jail- prisoners, who are suffering imprisonment ondifferent terms in the jail for committing various drug related crimes, about the badimpact of drugs in human health and our society. A documentary film show on “highlighting different anti-social or crime incidents,which are being occurred in the society centering the issues relating to drug- addiction,drug -trading and drug -peddling” was screened for the prisoners to motivate them tostage a come back to the normal life. Apart from this, a drama styled “Cuk Mala Takao” (Look opening your eyes) wasstaged at the jail premises to inspire them to build up their mind-set ready to give up thehabit or tendency of drug peddling for ensuring normal lifestyle forthem. After ending of the drama, all the prisoners, now in jail for committing drug-related offences spontaneously took an oath as saying that they will always say “no” tothe drugs and call others to say “no” to the drugs. Jail Super Mohammad Amirul Islam formally administered the oath at thedirectives of the deputy commissioner of Netrakona district and also the districtmagistrate Dr. Torun Kanti Shikder who attended there as chief guest. The function was also attended by police super Netrakona Joydeb Chowdhory, civil surgeon Netrakona Dr. Bijon Kanti Sarker and the jail officials including jailor of thedistrict jail Amzad Hussain.

RU student electrocuted

 A Rajshahi University (RU) student died after being electrocuted and two others got serious injuries on Monday while they were traveling by boat in Hateel Beel in Natore.
The deceased, Jahidul Islam, 21, was a 3rd year student of geography and environment science department. He hailed from Santhia upzilla of Pabna district. The injured were Jahidul’s fellow—Boishakhi Khatun and Alif Jahan Ripon have been admitted in Natore Sadar Hospital. As the conditions of the duo were deteriorating soon, they were referred to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, said Prof Tarikul Hasan, the university proctor. Md Shahinur, who was part of the tour said, we, a group of fifteen friends went at Naladanga Hateel Beel in a tour yesterday. We were travelling by boat at 12:00pm. “While we enjoyed our tour on the boat, they (Jahidul, Boishakhi and Ripon) were electrocuted as the electric wires came down in that place which we failed to see. Jahidul fell down in the water while Boishakhi and Ripon fell down on the boat”, he also said. “Immediately we brought the trio in hospital where the on duty doctor declared Jahidul death”, he continued.

Three-wheeler owner-workers protest continue in Barisal

Owners and workers of three-wheelers, popularly branded as Mahendra- Alfa, Tomtom, Mishuk, Tempoo, Nasimon, continuing their protests against restriction about plying on highway, demonstrated at Ichhladi under Wazirpur upazila on Barisal-Dhaka highway Tuesday. They also formed a human chain at the road side addressed by Shipon Molla, Khabir Uddin Hawladar, Anwar Hosen Khan and others. The participant three-wheeler owners and workers also demanded compensations and subsidies against banning their vehicle for plying on highways. The speakers of the programme said they collected the vehicles taking huge loans from different sources like banks, NGOs, cooperatives and money lenders under high rate of interests. They reading out a written statement and answering questions of the local journalists said at least 50 thousand family members of 7 thousand owners and 7 thousand workers of the three-wheelers in the area now facing harassments by law enforcing agencies in operating their vehicles on highway.
The three-wheeler owners and worker association leaders giving ultimatums threatened to start hunger strike till die if they failed to resume operation on highways and getting subsidy and compensations.
