AL ward leader arrested with arms

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-8) on Thursday arrested an Awami League ward committee leader with arms and ammunitions from Nabagram Road area of at Barisal city. The arrestee was identified as Ziauddin alias Abu Molla, 41, acting joint secretary of Ward no. 27 of Barisal city unit Awami League and son of Akkel Ali Mia on Nabagram Road. Captain Abul Bashar, company officer of RAB-8, said one arrested with one foreign made revolver and two round ammunitions from Mithila Enterprise, a near Textile College at Nabagram Road area of the city on early Thursday. Advocate Afjalul Karim, Barisal city secretary of Awami League said that Ziauddin was not a leader, but activist of that AL unit. Earlier he was warned after accused in drug peddling.
One gets 15-yr jail for keeping illegal arms
RAJSHAHI: One person was sentenced to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment by a trial tribunal here on Thursday for possessing firearms and ammunition illegally over four years back. Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Anup Kumar found the convict Moshiur Rahman Romel hailed from Dinajpur district guilty of the charges and pronounced the verdict in his presence. According to the prosecution story, in brief, is that a police team arrested Romel along with three revolvers and some ammunition after conducting a raid in a Dhaka-bound bus at Rajshahi bus terminal on May 24, 2011.
Subsequently, a case was lodged with the police station concerned. On completion of investigation police pressed charges accusing him. Additional Special Public Prosecutors Suhanta Sarker and Siraji Shawkat Saleheen appeared in the case on behalf of the state while Advocate Mahbubur Rahman defended the accused, reports BSS.
Voters updating in Khulna division begins today
KHULNA: Preparations have been completed for updating voters’ lists in 10 districts of Khulna division which begins today. Information collectors will make fresh voter list after visiting all the residences from tomorrow morning. Necessary forms have already reached all upazilas, an official said. Khulna Regional Election Office source said, the first phase voter lists updating works will begin at 25 upazilas in 10 districts of Khulna division from tomorrow. Information collection activities will be completed on August 9 while registration will begin from September 1 this year. Additional Regional Election Officer in Khulna Ruhul Amin said training of all supervisors have been completed and necessary forms have been sent to the information collectors, reports BSS..
T-Aman cultivation begins in Jamalpur
JAMALPUR: Farmers in the district have started Transplanted Aman (T-Aman) cultivation this season. Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) already fixed the target of T- Aman cultivation on 1,04,002 hectares of land with a production target over 2.5 lakh tonnes rice in seven upazilas of the district. According to the upazila wise break up of target of land is as follows: 30,808 hectares in sadar upazila, 13,808 hectares in Sarishabari upazila, 7,206 hectares in Islampur upazila, 15,762 in Melandah upazila, 8,303 hectares in Dewanganj upazila, 14,523 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila and 13,596 hectares in Madarganj upazila. The target of high yielding variety (HYV) of the paddy on 709 hectares with a production target 2,341 tonnes of rice, High breed on 73,191 hectares with a production target 1,98,914 tonnes of rice and local on 30,102 hectares with a production target 49,681 tonnes of rice have been fixed. The office said per hectare of production target of High breed variety was fixed at 3.30 tonnes, HYV at 2.72 tonnes and local at 1.65 tonnes. The agriculture department said farmers have already prepared T- Aman seed bed on 3,965 hectares of land in which High Breed on 80 hectares, HYV on 3,380 hectares and local on 505 hectares, reports BSS.
Farmer killed by lightning in C’nawabganj

 A farmer was killed and another injured as a thunderbolt struck them at Atahar Jugidyeing in sadar upazila on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Rana, 17, son of Manirul Islam of Hamidpur village in Nachole upazila. Tasiqul Islam Tosi, chairman of Jhilim Union Parishad, said a thunderbolt struck Rana and Shahidul while they were working in a crop filed around 4:30 pm, leaving Rana dead on the spot and two others injured. In another incident, three women were injured when a thunderbolt struck them in Nayanshuka area of sadar upazila on Thursday. They were identified as Jarina Begum, 55, wife of Nazrul Islam, and Nasima Khatun, 20, daughter of Alauddin and Namita Rani, 25, wife of Pushpati. The injured were rushed to Sadar Hospital.
2 held with arms, ammo in Jessore
BENAPOLE (Jessore):Police in separate drives arrested two people, including a robber, along with firearms and ammunition from different parts of Jessore district on Thursday night.
Tofail Ahmed, sub-inspector of the Detective Branch of Police, said a team of detectives conducted a drive at a rice mill and arrested Rabiul, a notorious robber from Barinagar Bazar in sadar upazila around 10:30pm. Following confessional statement, police recovered one shutter gun, two rounds of bullets, two sharp weapons and 200 pieces of Yaba tablet from under a bed.
