Two held with 120 bottles of phensidyl

Members of Detective Branch (DB) arrested two alleged drug peddlers along with 120 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup from Banuria village in Kaliganj upazila on Sunday morning. The arrestees were identified as Mansur Ali, 30, son of Abdul Mannan and Ariful Islam Rakib, 22, son of Mosharrof Biswas, both residents of the village. Sub-inspector of DB police Rafiqul Islam said on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the duo in the morning.Later, the law enforcers recovered 120 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup from their possession. A case was filed in this connection.
Handicapped woman gang raped in Chitalmari

A mentally handicapped young woman (24) was gang rapped by a number of miscreants at Shinga Ferry Ghat area under Chitalmari Upazila in the district on Saturday night. Some locals recovered the injured victim and informed the police of the matter. Police sent the victim to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital for her medical examination and tratment. In this connection a case was lodged with Chitalmari PS and one person was so far arrested by the police suspecting his involvement in the affair. Police and the locals said that at 10 pm on Saturday some miscreants caught the victim from Singa ferry ghat area and took her to a lonely place where they committed rape on her one after another forcibly and fled away leaving the victim there.. At that time some villagers of Khilgaon under the same Upazila found her there in unconscious condition and informed the police of the matter. Police recovered her and sent her to Sadar Hospiotal for her treatment and medical examination. In this connection a case was registered with Chitalmari PS accusing 3 persons. Police have so far arrested Nasir Shaikh (30), boatman of Singa ferry suspecting her involvement in the matter .
UP chairman held for ‘VGF rice misappropriation’
SUNAMGANJ: Police arrested the chairman of Polashpur Union Parishad in Bishwamvarpur upazila for allegedly misappropriating rice of Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme on Monday. The arrestee was identified as Soleman Mia, 42. Source said on Monday at 11am, Soleman started distributing 266 sacks of rice and alter stopped distributing those within a few hours saying that the rice stock ran out. In the meantime, deprived people brought out a procession against Soleman Mia and confined him to Union Parishad complex. Informed, upazila nirbahi officer Abdullah Al Mahamud rushed in along with police and arrested Soleman Mia. Mohammad Harun or Rashid, superintendent of police, confirmed the incident and said a case will be filed against Soleman Mia, reports UNB.
Robber ringleader injured in Khulna ‘gunfight’
KHULNA: The ringleader of a robber gang was injured in a reported gunfight with members of the detective branch (DB) of police at Ajapara village in Terokhada upazila on Tuesday early night. Rakonuzzaman, officer-in-charge of Khulna district detective branch (DB) of police, said, acting on secret information that a gang of robbers was taking preparation to commit robbery in Ajapara area, a team of the detective police conducted a drive in the area at about 12.30am and surrounded the robbers. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight. At one stage, Moeshed, the ringleader of the robber gang, was caught in the line of fire and received a bullet in his knee. Later, law enforcers arrested injured Morshed and four other robbers from the spot and seized a revolver, a pipe gun, some sharp weapons and five rounds of bullet from the spot. Process to file a case was underway, reports UNB.
249 families brought under power network
NAOGAON: About 249 families of two villages under Sadar upazila in the district have been brought under rural electrification network by Naogaon Palli Bidyut Samity (NPBS) on Wednesday. A simple function was also held at Gumardah village of the upazila. M Abdul Malek MP formally inaugurated the electrification programme at the villages of Gumardah and Shikarpur of the upazila as the chief guest. NPBS brought the villages under rural electrification network spending Taka about 20.54 lakh, reports BSS.
Bid to abduct college girl foiled, 3 held
RANGPUR: Local people caught three alleged abductors after foiling a kidnap bid at Betgari in Gangachhara upazila on Monday. The angry villagers also torched a microbus used in the abduction. The arrestees were identified as Moyen Miah,35, Mamun Miah,25, and Rashedul Islam,26. Quoting local people, police said a group of abductors were trying to drag Afsana Ferdous, a second year student of Betgari Dhantala Riasuddin College, onto a microbus as she was on way to her college in the morning. Hearing her scream, local people rushed in and caught the trio and gave them a good beating, leaving them critically injured. Later, the locals handed them over to police while their other associates managed to flee the scene, reports UNB.
