Businessman rescued, one held in Gournadi

Police rescued an abducted businessman and succeeded to arrest one of the gang members for demanding ransom against his release. The rescued businessman was identified as Habul Gharami, 35, of Dasar police station under Kalkini upazila of Madaripur and arrested miscreant was Tipu Haoladar, 22, of Gournadi. The victim and the arrested miscreant sent to jail after interrogation and producing before the court on Monday afternoon lodged a case against five accused of abductor-gang in this connection. Sajjad Hossain, Gournadi police station officer- in- charge, said Habul Gharami, a wood-log trader, came Gournadi on Sunday morning to collect arrear dues from local businessmen. After collecting Tk.61 thousand he went to a cinema hall of Gournadi to pass time as some other businessmen assured to give dues after launch time. When Habul came out from cinema, some youths called him to talk about business and abducting him brought to another place and snatching collected money tortured for ransom money.
Housewife killed by lightning strike in Jessore
BENAPOLE: A housewife was killed and three others were injured as a streak of thunderbolt hit them at Gorpara village in Sharsha upazila of Jessore district on Monday evening. The deceased was identified as Anwara Begum,39, wife of Abu Taleb, a resident of the village. Local sources said four people, including Anwara and her husband Abu Taleb, were injured when they were struck by lightning a strike while they were staying in a field during rainfall in the evening. The injured were rushed to Sharsha Upazila Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared Anwara dead. Union Parishad Chairman Alim Reza Bappi confirmed the death, reports UNB.
4 jailed for drug peddling in Sylhet

A mobile court here on Sunday sentenced four people to six months imprisonment each for their involvement in drug peddling. The convicts were identified as Khorshed Alam, 40, son of Sundar Ali, Selim Uddin, 32, son of late Mahabbat Ali, Abdul Barek, 25, son of late Siddik Ali, and Danis Miah, 28, son of late Kitab Ali, all residents of Lakma village in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj district. Police said on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the village in the afternoon and arrested the four while they were selling drugs. Later, they were produced before a mobile court of Executive Magistrate Iqbal Hossain who handed down the punishment. Officer-in-charge of Tahirpur Police Station Shahidullah confirmed the incident.

Robbers loot valuables in Faridpur
FARIDPUR: Robbers looted valuables from a house after injuring three of its inmates at Kamargram in Alfadanga upazila early Monday. The victims were identified as Akter Hossain, 60, Sekender Munsi, 44, and Rahela Begum, 56. Quoting witnesses, police said 7-8 armed robbers swooped on the house of Akter Hossain at the dead of night and looted the valuables. As the house inmates resisted, the robbers stabbed them with sharp weapons, leaving them injured. Later, the robbers escaped with the booty.
