BAU gets new adviser, proctor

The authorities of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) have appointed Prof Dr Jasim Uddhin Khan of Animal Nutrition as Student Affairs Adviser and Prof Dr AKM Zakir Hossain of Crop Botany Department appointed as proctor. They are appointed for two years term, confirmed BAU Registrar Abdul Khaleque. He said, the ex-proctor Prof Dr Harun-ur-Rashid and Adviser Prof Dr Zohurul Hoque Khandaker submitted a resignation letter from their respective post on March 29. Mentionable, Pro-Awami League Teachers Association ‘Gonotrantrik Shikkok Forum’ in a probe found the involvement of ex-proctor and Adviser were in mass corruption in staff appointment by former vice-chancellor Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Hoque. The probe also suggested suspending the teachers from the association as they had dishonored the association’s discipline.
Youth held with 51 Yaba tablets in Dohar
KERANIGANJ: Police in a drive arrested a young man along with 51 pieces of Yaba tablets from Malikanda village in Dohar upazila on Thursday night. The deceased was identified as Nahid Hossain, 25, son of Shahidul Hossain of the village. Acting on secret information, a team of police arrested Nahid and recovered 51 pieces of Yaba tablets after searing his body in the night, said Mahmudul Haque, officer-in-charge of Dohar Police Station.Nahid had long been involved in selling Yaba, said the OC.A case was filed under the Narcotics Control Act, reports UNB.

KUSHTIA: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested a man along with a light gun and two rounds of bullet from Gobra Miapara in Kumarkhali upazila early Friday. The arrestee was identified as Shamimuzzaman alias Mabud, 26, son of Jahir Mia of the village. Tipped off, a team of RAB-12 conducted a drive at the village around 2.00 am and arrested Shamimuzzaman and recovered an LG and two rounds of bullet from his possession. Shamimuzzaman has long been involved in arms trading, said Rab sources.A case was filed with Kumarkhali Police Station, reports UNB.
18 Jamaat-Shibir men held in Gazipur
GAZIPUR: Police in a drive arrested 18 leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir from Kanthalia Chala in Kaliakoir upazila on Thursday. Tipped off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the Jamaat-Shibir men while they were holding a clandestine meeting in the area in the afternoon, said Omar Faruk, officer-in-charge of Kaliakoir Police Station. They were arrested on charge of holding anti-government meeting, said the OC, reports UNB.
2 killed in Natore road accidents
NATORE: Two persons-one passenger and a truck driver-were killed in two road accidents in Sadar and Boraigram upazilas of the district yesterday morning. Police and Fire Service sources said the first accident occurred on Dhaka-Natore highway when a pickup van ploughed into a roadside ditch after the driver of the vehicle lost control over the steering. Lone passenger of the pickup van Abdul Latif Mirdha, 55, an employee of a private bank, died on the spot. The second accident occurred when a Dhaka bound mango laden truck from Chapainawabganj lost control over the steering hitting a roadside tree killing its driver on the scene at Kalikapur under Boraigram upazila. The helper of the truck was rescued from the spot by the Fire Service team and sent to Natore Modern Sadar Hospital, reports BSS.
