Police official accused for torturing wife sent to jail

Police SI Abdul Wares, 40, of Kawnia police station of the city, suspended after accused for torturing under aged third wife demanding dowry, sent to jail on Monday as judge rejected his bail prayer after surrendering before court. Mahmuda Begum, mother of the victim as complainant lodged the case (no.4, dated 10-03-15) after recovery of her minor aged daughter class-eight student Habiba Aktar Marufa, 14, from locked house of SI Wares in front of Kawnia police station on March 5, 2015, by initiatives on Bangladesh Women Lawyers Association. Inspector Selim Reza, Kawnia police station officer in charge and investigation officer of the case, submitted charge sheet against accused SI Wares on April 28 under sections 11/Ga of the act for prevention of torture against women and children 2000 (revised in 2003), 342,506 of penal code. SI Wares fleeing from Barisal police line after accused in case, received 4-weeks interim bail from High Court on April 6. He surrendering before tribunal for preventing torture against women and children in Barisal on Monday, appealed for permanent bail. Md. Adib Ali, additional district and session judge in charge of the tribunal, rejecting the bail prayer opposed by Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association Barisal unit, ordered to send accused police Sub Inspector Wares to jail, said Kawsar Hossain Titu, bench clerk of the court. Now trial process of the case would be started, added Advocate Umme Asma Shelly, who opposed the bail on behalf of Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association Barisal unit. Masuk Kamal, official of BNWLA Barisal unit, said accused SI Abdul Wares sent to jail on Monday afternoon. Earlier on April 1, 2015, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission issuing a letter asked Barisal Metropolitan Police Commissioner to take necessary action about the allegation. The right activists demanded speedy trial and exemplary punishment against the law enforcing police official accused for torturing women, child-marriage and polygamy by concealing facts.

Int’l Day of Midwife observed in Sylhet

International Day of the midwife was observed in the Sylhet like elsewhere in the globe in a befitting manner as part of an ongoing campaign to highlight the needs for midwives.
This year’s theme of the day is “The World Needs Midwives Today More Than Ever”.
Marking the day, organizers arranged workshop, seminars, concert, singing contest, karaoke, rally, street parade, setting up stalls in market-places or other popular areas to publicize midwifery services and offer information and advice.Director of Sylhet osmani Medical College and Hospital inaugurated a Rally at Upshohor in Sylhet marking the day.Dr.Ruhul Amin, Maksudur Rahman, Shamim Ahmed, Humaun kabir also attended the Rally. May 5 is the internationally recognized day for highlighting the work of midwives. International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) established the idea of the ‘International Day of the Midwife’ following suggestions and discussion among Midwives Associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992.

BCL leader expelled in Sylhet

Sylhet city BCL authorities on Tuesday expelled a 22 no unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader in Sylhet.
The expelled student was identified as Mushahid khan, Secretary of 22 no unit BCL in Sylhet city. Sylhet city BCL President Rahad Torofder confirmed the matter.

One held with 120 bottles of Phensidyl in Narail

NARAIL: Members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested an alleged drug peddler along with 120 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup from Sitarampur on the Narail-Jessore highway on Wednesday. The arrestee was identified as Rony Islam,30, son of Amirul Islam, a resident of Hudayerpur Rakhalkhali area in Sadar upazila of Pabna district. Police said on a tip-off, a team of DB police conducted a drive in the area and intercepted a Jessore-bound microbus in the evening. Later, they recovered 120 bottles of Indian Phensidyl syrup from the vehicle and arrested Rony. A case was filed in this connection. Superintendent of police Sarder Rakibul Islam confirmed the arrest, reports UNB.

Woman killed as human hauler hits her in Pabna

Pabna: A woman was killed when a human hauler (Nasiman) hit her at Chinakhara on the Dhaka-Pabna Highway in Sujanagar upazila on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Piara Begum,48, wife of Ashraf Hossain Ashu, a resident of Gobindapur of the upazila. Police said the accident took place in the area at about 8:30 pm when a human hauler crashed into Piara while she was crossing the highway, leaving her dead on the spot. Officer-in-charge of Sujanagar Police Station Habibur Rahman confirmed the accident.
