Fire at Barisal Bhatarkhal slum gutted 13 houses

Fire at Bhatarkhal slum area of Kirtonkhola river side in Barisal city has gutted and damaged thirteen houses on Monday noon.Fire service estimated damages of properties worth Tk 15 lakhs, while the victims claimed damages worth Tk.30 lakhs.Barisal City Corporation Mayor Ahsan Habib Kamal, councilors visiting the spot assured to help the affected people. Witnesses said the fire broken out after 12:00 noon and Fire Service rushed to the spot within ten minutes. The flame was controlled and fire extinguished within an hour, said Shakhwat Hossain Officer in Charge of Kotwali police station. Fire service also succeeded to save hundred houses and properties at the slum and adjacent area with the help of the local people, he added. Anowara Begum, one of the affected victims in the slum area, claimed that properties worth Tk 30 lakhs were damaged by fire. However Md. Alauddin, senior station officer, Barisal fire service station, said damages would be Tk15 lakhs.
Swechchhasebak Dal leader held in Sylhet

Police arrested a leader of Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, the volunteer front of BNP, from Shahjalal Uposhohor area of the city on Sunday on charges of subversive act and vehicle torching. The arrested was identified as Joynal Ahmed, a leader of Sylhet city unit of Swechchhasebak Dal.
Shakhawat Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah-Paran Police Station, said they arrested Joynal from the area at noon. Joynal was accused in four cases, including two cases for subversive acts and one vehicle torching case.
Two houses robbed in Sylhet
Robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and valuables worth about Tk 25 lakh from two houses here early Saturday. Locals said a gang of armed robbers entered the Block-C, House No. 323 of one Beerai Mia under Khojaer Khala area in Dakkhin Surma upazila around 4:00am breaking the door and looted 25 grams of gold ornaments, cash, mobile phone sets and valuables worth Tk 15 lakh. On the other hand, a gang of armed robbers looted worth Tk 10 lakh from the house of one Taimur Rahman of Anandapur village of Zakiganj upazila under the district breaking the door around 3:00am.
BNP -backed panel sweeps RU Officers Assoc polls

BNP- backed Moshiul Alam-Nazrul Islam panel swept over Rajshahi University Officers’ Association election held on campus on Saturday. BNP- backed panel got 15 out of 19 posts against Pro-Awami League backed Tobibur Rahman-Kamruzzaman Chanchal panel. On Saturday, votes were casted from 8:00am to 2:00pm while Ziaul Alam, election commissioner declared the result in the evening. Moshiul Alam Hossain and AKM Nazrul Islam alias Sheli were elected as president and general secretary respectively. The other office bearers from BNP backed panel are—vice president M Jaidur Rahman, organizing secretary Bazlur Rashid, joint secretary Jakirul Islam, office secretary Mokhter Hossain, publicity secretary Syed Abu Rashed Md Bokhtiar Ali, cultural secretary Mojibur Rahman, social welfare and sport affairs secretary Dr. Habiba Haider and 6 other members.
Two held with 2,581 bottles phensidyl in C’nawabganj

Two alleged drug smugglers were arrested with 2,581 bottles of phensidyl from a passenger bus at Kalupur under Shibganj Upazila in Chapainawabganj on Wednesday morning. The arrested persons have been identified as Khaibur Rahman, 39, son of late Bazlur Rahman and Wahedur Rahman, 28, son of late Ashraful Islam both of Baharampur Hatatpara under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district. RAB said, acting on secret information, an operation team of RAB from Chapainawabganj camp detained a Dhaka bound passenger bus ‘Jatrisheba’ at around 7-30 am and after searching the bus RAB found the bottles of phensidyl. RAB also arrested Khaibur and Wahedur in this connection.
