40 maunds of jatka seized,10 fishermen fined
SHARIATPUR: Forty maunds of jatka (Hilsa not more than 10 inches long) were seized by a mobile court in several drives in the Padma and Meghna rivers under Baderganj upazila of the district on Thursday. During the drives, the court also arrested 10 fishermen and fined them of Taka 5,000 each for illegal jatka catching. The court, led by Baderganj upazila nirbahi officer Mohammad Naser Uddin Jewal, conducted the drives in those rivers with the help of Baderganj upazila police. The arrested fishermen were identified as Moshin Miah, Liakat Ali,Marfat Ali, Mohammad Selim Miah,Haroon Patwary,Khalil Miah,Asghar Hossain,Sohail Mal, Shipon Mal and Afzu Mizi of Baderganj upazila. Later, the seized jatka were distributed among the poor and different orphanages of the upazila, reports BSS.
Seminar on VAT held in Netrakona
NETRAKONA: Speakers at an advocacy seminar on “Value Added Tax’ (VAT) and Supplementary Duty (SD) Act -2012” here on Thursday underlined the importance of motivating the tax- payers to pay their taxes on time for greater interest of the nation. They urged the tax payers to come forward to pay their VAT by using the “on-line VAT Payment Network” which was introduced by the National Board of Revenue (NBR). The speakers also emphasized the need for ensuring proper official service network in Customs Excise and VAT offices and organizing field level VAT fairs and other motivational campaigns to let the businessmen and others tax payers know about the latest on-line VAT payment networks and SD Act-2012. Customs Excise and VAT Netrakona division organized the seminar at local public hall here to popularize the on-line VAT payment network of the NBR. Administrator of Netrakona ZIla Parishad Motiur Rahman Khan addressed the seminar as chief guest while assistant director of customs Excise and VAT Netrakona division Mohammad Safiul Alam was in the chair. A key note paper was presented at the seminar by additional commissioner of Customs Excise and VAT Dhaka North AKM Mahbubur Rahman. The seminar was addressed, among others, by mayor of Netrakona pourashava Prasanta Kumar Ray and president of Netrakona chamber of commerce and industries Abdul Wahed, reports BSS..
Fake Indian rupees recovered from C’nawabganj
CHAPAINAWABGANJ: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered six lakh Indian fake Rupees from Tarapur field under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj district in the early hours of yesterday. Commanding Officer (CO) of 9-BGB Battalion Jafar Sheikh Mohammad Bazlul Hoque said acting on secret information, a patrol team of BGB from Shingnagar border out post raided the area at around 3.30 am and recovered the aforesaid fake currency in an abandoned condition. The recovered notes were deposited to Shibganj Thana, he added, reports BSS.
46,266 hectares brought under Jute cultivation
JAMALPUR: Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has brought a total of 46,266 hectares of land under Jute cultivation programme to produce 493,881 bales of jute during the current season. The DAE sources said 4 high yielding varieties of jute seeds are being cultivated by farmers of the district to boost jute production. The department said 5,841 hectares have been brought under the Deshi variety, 38,547 hectares under Tosha, 124 under Mesta and 1,754 hectares under Kenaf variety. According to upazila wise break up of land is as follows 3,488 hectares in Jamalpur sadar upazila, 5,682 hectares in Sarishabari, 15,879 hectares in Islampur, 3,469 hectares in Melandah ,6,346 hectares in Dewanganj, 7,304 hectares in Madarganj and 3,998 hectares in Bakshiganj . Official sources said 465,072 bales of jute were produced on 46,095 hectares of land in the district last year.
The farmers of the district have already cultivated jute on 15,792 hectares of land till April 14, reports BSS.
