Firebombs recovered from AL leader’s house in Jessore

A total of five firebombs were recovered from the residence of Gazi Narul Islam, vice president, Abhaynagar upazila unit Awami League and also president of Nawapara Bazar Committee on Tuesday evening. Enamul Haque Babul, general secretary, Abahynagar upazila unit Awami League confirmed the informed to New Nation saying that the bombs were recovered from the rooftop of the kitchen of the leader’s Mazar Road based residence at Nawapara industrial town. He, however, did not want to make any comment about keeping of the firebombs. Talking to New Nation, Sheikh Nasir Uddin, officer in-charge, Abhaynagar police station told that the bomb like substances were recovered from the rooftop of the kitchen of the AL leader at around 7pm on Tuesday. ‘Miscreants could keep those there to make him frightened over enmity’, he added. Being informed by the AL leader the police recovered the substance kept in a bag, the OC added. A general diary was lodged with the police station in this connection. But none was arrested.

Body of housewife recovered from pond

Dead body of a housewife named Reksona Begum (30) was recovered from a pond, adjacent to her house in the village Baliadanga under Fakirhat Upazila in the district recently. Locals said that she was allegedly tortured to death as she failed to pay her husband a fat amount of cash Taka as dowry. The dead body was made to sink in the adjacent pond after tying a number of bricks with it. Police already arrested Farida Begum (60), mother-in-law of the deceased suspecting her involvement in the affair. All other members of the family are absconding. Mizanur Rahman, brother of the deceased said that Reksona Begum, daughter of one Md. Jobbar Shaikh of village Kamta under Fakirhat Upazila was given married to Arif Mallik, son of one Abduj Jobbar Shaikh of village Baliadnaga under the same Upazila some 12/13 years ago. By this time Resona gave birth 2 female children named Shova (07) and Iva (02). Very recently the husband and other members of his family created pressure on her to realize a fat amount of cash Taka as dowry from her parents. But she failed to mitigate the demand. After that she was missing since April 1. On Friday at noon the local people found the dead body floating in an adjacent pond and informed the police of Fakirhat PS of the matter. Police rushed to the spot, recovered the dead body and sent the same to morgue for its autopsy. It is primarily gauged that she was, perhaps, strangulated to death.

Businessman injured by attacks over rumor of torching shops

One businessman injured by attacks of fellows on Saturday in altercations over torching shops at Torki Bandar market in Gournadi upazila of Barisal for evading loan recovery. Chanchal Majhi, 50, a cloth merchant, alleged that he received severe injuries by beating of two other businessmen while talking about the gossip about rumor of torching shops for evading loan recovery. The rumor spread in the area after 11 business enterprises including six godowns were gutted in a fire on March 29 at the Torki Bandar Bazaar demanding damages of Tk 5 core. However after extinguishing the fire it was found that affected business enterprises named Keya Enterprise had loans of Tk 45 lakhs from Torki branch of Islami Bank, I W Distribution had loans of Tk 25 lakhs from Torki branch of Sonali Bank, Tk 15 lakhs from a leasing company. The firms were owned by Torikul Islam Dipu and Kazi Alamin and there were no goods in their firms to be damaged by fire.

Renovation work of Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium open

Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith on Friday said the government would finalise the next national budget giving importance to the education, health and sanitation sector. “We will ensure a total sanitation this time though the country has achieved an almost 100 per cent sanitation coverage,” he said while inaugurating the renovation of Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam auditorium and an open stage as the chief guest here. He said the government had given importance to the energy and power sector in the last five years’ national budgets. The minister said the government would construct an energy store and sea port in the southern region of the country with a budget several times higher than that of the Padma Bridge.He said construction of the Padma Bridge is going on in full swing. Awami League (AL) Organizing Secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, Sylhet City Awami League president and former mayor Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, General Secretary Asad Uddin Ahmad, district AL Vice President Ashfaq Ahmad Chowdhury, General Secretary Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam, chief executive officer of the city corporation Enamul Habib spoke on the occasion.
