BARI holds Field Day

The Oilseed Research Centre (ORC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) has arranged a Field Day on the research activities of ORC at the oilseed research field of the Institute on Sunday. The field day, funded by the ‘Enhance Production of Oil Crops (EPOC) Project (BARI Part)’ and Oilseed Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur was participated by senior scientists, officers, staff and labors from various divisions and centre’s of BARI.BARI Director General Dr. Debasish Sarker inaugurated the Field Day as Chief Guest while Director (ORC) Dr. Md. Abdul Latif Akanda presided over the function. Director (Support , Services) Dr. Md. Kamrul Hasan, Director (Research) Dr. Md. Tariqul Islam, Director (Horticulture Research Centre) Dr. Apurba Kanti Chowdhury and former Director (Planning & Evaluation) Dr. Rina Rani Saha, Chief Scientific Officer of the OFRD Dr. Muhammad Sahiduzzaman were present as special guests. Chief Scientific Officer of ORC and Project Director Dr. Ferdousi Begum gave the welcome address. The guests attending in the Field Day event inspected a variety of research activities at the research fields of the Oilseed Research Center.

2 drug traders held

Police of Kachua PS arrested two drug traders from the two different places of Kachua Upazila in Bagerhat on Friday and Thursday. The arrested drug traders are Md. Sohag Hawladar (26), son of one late Jobbar Hawladar of village Charfultala within Gopalpur Union and Md. Mokarram Hossain (37), son of late Shahjahan Fakir of village Kamargati under the same Upazila. It is learnt from the police that acting on secret information a police squad led by Md. Monirul Islam, Officer-in-charge of Kachua PS raided Fultala Bazar within Gopalpur Union at Friday night and caught red-handed drug trader Sohag Hawladar from Tinraster Mor area while he was selling ganja. In this connection a case lodged with the PS under Narcotic Act against Sohag Hawladar. It is also learnt from the police source that on information a contingent of police led by Md. Monirul Islam, Officer-in-charge of the PS raided Kamargati Bazar at Thursday night (at about11 pm) and arrested drug trader Mokarram Hossain near from the house of one Ilias Shaikdar along with Yaba pills while he was selling the same. In this connection a case was also registered with the PS under the Narcotic Act.

Meet on communal harmony in Sylhet

Chairman of the Bangladesh United Islamic Party Maulana Ismail Hossain said “It is very important to add the thoughts of those great revolutionaries to our progress. At the same time, the history of the oppressed revolutionaries must be revived in the history made in the interest of the state. He said this while addressing a discussion meeting on the role of religious leaders in maintaining communal harmony at Sylhet Nazrul Auditorium on Friday. The meeting was presided over by Alhaj Maulana Moinul Haque Chowdhury, Central Organizing Secretary of Bangladesh United Islami Party. Maulana Ismail Hossain said that the scholars of the subcontinent have a glorious role to play in the struggle against the British. In that continuity, scholars still have a role to play in the development of the overall situation in the country, including the preservation of communal harmony. Because, today, when Bangladesh is advancing at a breakneck pace along the highway of development of the country, Bangladesh and the anti-independence forces are conspiring at home and abroad to stop this progress.

Two of human trafficking ring arrested
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) -9 arrested two persons from Sylhet on charges of human trafficking on Tuesday. A team of RAB-9 raided and arrested them from Serampore Bazar under Moghlabazar in Sylhet. The arrested are Shahidul Islam Shahin, 40, son of late Abdul Alim of Nazirergaon of Jalalabad police station of Sylhet and Mohammad Ali of Dakshin Sultanpur village of Moglabazar police station. Manik Miah’s son Ashikur Rahman (35). The RAB is monitoring a few more members of this human trafficking ring. Major Mahfuzur Rahman, media officer of RAB-9, said that they would be arrested soon. “A young man from Sylhet who was captured by this gang has recently fled India and complained to us,” he said. Later, RAB-9 started investigation and arrested two members of the gang.
Major Mahfuzur Rahman said, it is a terrible cycle. They showed various temptations and sent young men and women to different countries including Nepal and India and took them hostage in the hands of the gang members there. He later extorted money from the prisoner’s family. In India, a young man who was captured in this way has recently escaped and taken refuge with us.
Major Mahfuzur Rahman further said that a lot of information was obtained by interrogating the two arrested persons. We are keeping an eye on a few more members of this gang, they will be arrested soon.

Thief arrested while stealing in Hossainpur

A thief named Rakir Mia (19) was arrested and handed over to the police after being beaten up by a thief while cutting a grill in Hossainpur of Kishoreganj. He is Md. Manik Miah of Dahura Village in Pumdi Union of the upazila. At that time, four or five more of his associates escaped but the process of filing a case in their name is underway. At around 3am on Friday, a pickup van with an obscure number was waiting in front of the Sohail Mia Workshop in the old Bus Stand area of the municipal area, while another thief, Sohail Mia (20), was trying to open the door inside the workshop and take out the SS Steel goods. Meanwhile, the owner saw the pickup in front of the shop at 3 pm when the owner’s son started shouting, they fled away. Later, at around 8 am on Saturday, the police rescued the thief along with the pickup van used in the theft and seized the pickup van and took it to the Police Station. On the other hand, the thief was taken to the Police Station after first aid at the Upazila Health Complex.
